It has been a busy summer across the province with the Munster age-grade representative squads preparing for their respective Interprovincial campaigns.

The Interpro series for Munster’s U19 Boys, U18 Boys Schools, U18 Boys Clubs and U18 Girls squads all kick off in August.

This month, all squads participated in a residential camp at the University of Limerick which involved the use of the facilities in the High Performance Centre which included pitch sessions and gym work in addition to workshops around nutrition and sports psychology.

We caught up with former Ireland international Seán Cronin who is assistant coach of the Munster U18 Boys Schools squad and he explains the screening process which took place throughout the season.

“A screening process is ran throughout the year and there’s constant communication with coaches within the schools,” Cronin said.

“We ran a trial game against Connacht in and around the Easter Holidays and a trial game amongst the players as well to try to finalise our squad which is 30 players for the programme.”

Cronin continued:

“We think we have a really exciting group here. I know some of the coaches have worked with the group at U17s level. There’s some really, really good potential here and we’re looking to see where we can get them to.”

U18 Schools player James O’Leary, who won the Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup with PBC back in March, admits the training is tough but enjoyable.

“It’s tough going to be fair, training is hard but it’s very enjoyable, you get to connect well with the lads. The facilities are top-class so it’s very enjoyable. The HPC is the best of the best so it’s good.”
