Munster U18 Clubs vs Leinster, August 2023 @INPHO

With the PwC Under 18s Clubs Interprovincial Championships starting in just over two weeks time, the Munster squad are well into their preparations at the University of Limerick.

Players have spent time at a residential camp, enabling them to use the facilities in the High Performance Centre, benefit from pitch sessions with position specific training, as well as receive workshops on nutrition and sports psychology. It has given them a flavour of what life is like as a professional athlete.

We spoke to Gerry Casey, Munster U18s Clubs Head Coach, and Kanturk RFC player Finn O’Dwyer, to find out more about the camps and what’s involved in the programme.

“It gives the players a first taste of what a professional set up is,” Casey said.

“They’re in on Monday, they might have gym, be on pitch, and then check into residential. They have an education model that night, so they’re given an overall look at what a professionals day is.

“Then the following morning they’re up, they’re cooking their own meals and they’re tidying their rooms. It brings them in as a group together. It’s the Munster family, the Munster way that they’re getting a picture of, so as an overall programme it’s absolutely fantastic.”
