Weekend Club Round-Up

Highfield shocked U.C.C. in the opening round of the Munster Senior Cup as Thomond booked their place in the Limerick Charity Cup Final.

There was a big shock in the opening game at the Mardyke in the opening game in the Munster Senior Cup as Highfield defeated U.C.C. 36-20.

U.C.C. dominated the opening half and led 13-3 at half time with a try, conversion and two penalties from scrum half Ben Nugent to a penalty by Paddy O’Toole.

However Highfield turned the game around in the first ten minutes of the second half scoring four tries with Paddy O’Toole getting two and Dave Kelly and Paul Stack one apiece and all were converted by O’Toole.

Ben Barnes scored a try for the students seven minutes from time and Nugent converted; before Richard Duggan completed the scoring with a fifth try for the Woodleigh Park side.

Highfield will now host Young Munster in the next round.

Thomond booked their place in the final of the Limerick Charity Cup with a 28-14 win over Old Crescent at Rosbrien.

Owen O’Neill, Dara O’Neil, Wayne Mullally and Dara Payne scored tries for Thomond and Ben Seargent converted all four tries.

Larry Hanly and Alan Bennie scored tries for Crescent and Shane O’Brien converted both.

Corca Dhuibhne caused a surprise with a 23-5 away win over Killarney to reach the final of the McElligott Cup.

Micheal Breathnach, Cathal Begley and Ciaran O’Coilleain were the Gaeltacht side’s try scorers and Shane Griffin kicked two penalties and a conversion.

In the other semi final Castleisland defeated Tralee 11-10.
