Weekend Junior Round-Up

The Munster Junior side finished their Interprovincial campaign with an away win over Connacht in Creggs as Thomond completed the grand slam at Junior 2 level.

Munster finished as runners-up to Ulster in this season’s Junior Interprovincial campaign after their 40-33 away win over Connacht.

After the disappointment of last week’s defeat by Ulster, Munster were a different side running in five tries to lead 40-17 in the final stages. At this point Munster emptied their bench and Connacht responded with three late tries.

Kieran Downey scored two of Munster’s tries, with Greg Higgins, Warren Kelly and Eoghan O’Dwyer getting one each.

Higgins kicked a penalty and Eoin Geary added three conversions and two penalties.

The Munster side was: Mark Chandler (Cobh Pirates); Eoghan O’Dwyer (Thurles), Alan McMahon (Dungarvan), Greg Higgins (Cobh Pirates), Warren Kelly (St Senan’s); Eoin Geary (Cobh Pirates), Nicky Irwin (Thurles); Pa Ryan (St Senan’s), Mike Cronin (Castleisland), Danny Lambe (Kilfeacle); Ruairi O'Donnell (St Mary’s) capt, Dave Foley (Newcastle West); Dave Kiersey (Kilfeacle), Mike Culhane (Newcastle West), Kieran Downey (Castleisland).
Replacements: Fergal Lawlor (St. Senan’s), Robbie Colclough (Waterpark), Rory Hannon (Waterpark), Brian Duggan (St. Mary’s), Ian Fitzgerald (St. Senan’s), Sean Herlihy (Newcastle West);Vivion Grisewood (Clanwilliam).

Thomond won the Tony O’Flynn Memorial Cup at Wilton to claim the grand slam at Junior Two level with a 13-10 win against Highfield.

This was a thrilling game in the balance right up to the final whistle. David Guerin opened the scoring with a try for Thomond but Highfield hit back to level with a try by Neal Griffin.

A second try by Conor McMahon gave Thomond a 10-5 half-time lead. Damien Carmelo increased Thomond’s advantage with a penalty but a try by Alan Spillett kept Highfield in the game, but they were unable to add to their tally as Thomond emerged winners.
