Weekend Junior Roundup

Both leaders Richmond and Kilfeacle maintained their unbeaten run in Division One of the Munster Junior League as they extended their lead at the top of the table.

Defending champions Richmond needed an injury time try by Gareth O’Hanlon to defeat Galbally 11-6. Brian Mullins gave Richmond an early 6-0 lead with two penalties, but Greg Airey had Galbally level at half time with two penalties. The game looked like it was heading for a draw until O’Hanlon struck in the final minute.

Kilfeacle made it five wins from five after their 19-9 home win over Skibbereen. Kilfeacle led 16-0 at half time with a try from Jack O’Sullivan and a conversion and three penalties by Shane Looby. Skibbereen came more into the game after the break with Steve Hansel kicking three penalties for the visitors and Looby added another penalty for the home side.

For the second successive week, Newcastle West caused a major shock with a win over one of the top sides. The West Limerick side travelled to Clonmel and put a serious dent in the Tipperary’s hopes of league success with a 21-14 victory. Alan Roche opened the scoring with a penalty for the visitors after twenty minutes. A try by Gareth Mulcahy two minutes before half time and a Danny Lyons penalty gave Clonmel an 8-3 interval lead. Lyons and Roche exchanged penalties before a try from James Kelly on fifty five minutes brought Newcastle West level. Lyons put Clonmel back in front with a penalty but Roche levelled. Five minutes from time Declan Moloney scored a try for the West Limerick side and Roche converted.

Kanturk bounced back from last week’s surprise defeat by Newcastle West with a narrow 23-19 home win over Waterpark. A penalty and a drop goal from Graham Claxton gave the visitors a 6-0 half time lead. Two penalties from Darragh Meade tied the scores and tries by Peter Earlie and Conor Breen both converted by Meade put the home side ahead. Stephen McAuliffe added a drop goal and Waterpark replied with a try by Jonathan Booth and two drop goals and a conversion by Claxton.

Tralee moved into fifth place after their 47-10 home win over St. Mary’s. Sean O’Mahony scored two tries for the winners and Christian McCarthy, Garrett Walsh, Hugh Moran, Owen Tough and Michael Deane got one each. Daniel Clarke kicked six conversions. Matthew Hickey and Barry Gibbons replied with tries for Mary’s.

St. Senan’s recorded their first league win with a 14-10 home win over Old Christians. Ian Fitzgerald scored a try for the winners and Philip Noone kicked three penalties. Old Christians replied with a try from Stuart Lee and a conversion and penalty by Max Castell.

Cobh Pirates won their local derby with a 23-6 home win over Crosshaven. A try, conversion and penalty by Eoin Geary gave the Pirates a 10-3 interval lead. Ian Smith replied with a penalty for the visitors. Jason Anglim and Tom Rice scored tries for the Pirates after the break and Geary kicked another penalty. Crosshaven’s only reply was a second Smith penalty.

A last minute try by Robert Browne was enough to send Abbeyfeale to the top of the Third Division as they defeated Charleville 18-15. Johnny O’Neill and Des Power scored tries for Charleville and Ryan Brennan kicked a penalty and a conversion to leave the home side 15-3 ahead at the interval. Thomas Enright kicked a penalty for Abbeyfeale. Sean Scannell scored a try for the visitors and Enright added another penalty and a conversion before Browne’s late strike.

Youghal and Mallow will contest this season’s Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield Final. Youghal recorded a 19-8 away win over Ennis. Alan Frahill scored Youghal’s try and Keith McCarthy added a conversion and four penalties. John Moore replied with a try for the Clare side and Dave Murphy kicked a penalty.

Mallow recorded a 16-7 home win over Castleisland in the other semi final. Two penalties from Andy Cashman gave Mallow a 6-0 half time lead. Cashman added a third penalty and converted a try by Tom Gardner. Matthew Ahern replied with a try for Castleisland and Connie Buckley converted.

In an exciting Martin O’Sullivan Cup semi final Waterford City defeated Fermoy 20-18 at the North Cork venue. A try, conversion and penalty by Jeff Daly gave Fermoy a 10-7 interval lead Damien Kennedy replied with a try for the visitors and Barry Power converted. Daly extended the home side’s lead with a penalty but two penalties from Power had the sides level. Tadgh Dunne looked like he scored the winning try for Fermoy minutes from time, but the visitors hit back immediately with a try by Stephen O’Rourke and Power converted to send Waterford through to the final where they will face Abbeyfeale.
