Weekend Junior Rugby Round Up

Richmond won their third First Division Munster Junior League title as Division Two and Three leaders Mallow and Dungarvan move closer to promotion.

A bonus point win at Richmond Park was enough to see Richmond capture the championship with a 27-22 home victory over Old Christians with one game still remaining.
The home side led 8-3 at half time with a try from Michael O’Friel and a penalty by Darragh Clancy to a Conor Mangan penalty for the visitors.
Gareth O’Hanlon extended Richmond’s advantage with a try but Stuart Lee replied with a try for Christians. Tries by Ross O’Neill and James Hayes, both converted by Clancy secured the bonus point and put the home side 27-8 ahead. A late rally by the Rathcooney side which yielded tries from Conor Quaid and Alan O’Dea and Mangan and Aidan Tobin each converted secured a valuable losing bonus point which could be enough to keep the Cork side in the top flight next season.

Kanturk will finish as runners up after they came from behind to defeat Galbally 6-3. The County Limerick side who were deducted eleven points in mid week led 3-0 at half time with a penalty from a Danny Hayes. Darragh Meade kicked two penalties for the visitors after the break to secure the points.

A late rally in the final twenty minutes which yielded three tries saw Skibbereen lost at home to Clonmel 30-6.
David Shannon put Skibb’ ahead with a penalty after five minutes but Stephen Pyke put Clonmel in front with a try after twenty one minutes. A penalty from Ben Martin ten minutes before the break gave Clonmel an 8-3 interval lead.
Shannon kicked his second penalty for Skibb’ six minutes into the second half. Robbie Carroll scored a try for Clonmel on sixty minutes.
Martin kicked a penalty five minutes from time and Clonmel followed up with tries from Ciaran Burke and martin both of which Martin converted.

Crosshaven moved up to fourth place and are in with a good chance of qualifying for the All Ireland Junior Cup next season after their 38-0 home win over bottom side Thurles. Daryl Foley, James Rochford, Eamon Ring, Cian Keegan, Pete Morrissy and Rory Holfer were Crosshaven try scorers and Foley kicked four conversions.

St. Senan’s eased their relegation worries with a 16-5 home win over Tralee, a result that puts a big dent in Tralee’s hopes of a top four finish. Hugh Murphy scored a try for the winners and Declan Collins kicked a conversion and three penalties. Aonrai Donovan replied with a try for Tralee.

Kilfeacle won the big Tipperary derby defeating Clanwilliam 12-8, but are still occupying the second relegation spot three points behind Clanwilliam. Pat Ryan and James Mullane scored tries for Kilfeacle and Keith Burke kicked a conversion. Derek Shiels scored a try for the home side and Robert Doyle kicked a penalty.

Waterpark defeated Cobh Pirates 10-9. Niall Gilhooly scored a try for the winners and Paddy Kiersey kicked a conversion and penalty. Eamon Ronan replied with three penalties for Cobh.

Mallow and St Mary’s still occupy the two promotion spots in Division Two after bonus point victories. Mallow had a comfortable 38-13 home win over Newport. Michael Sweeney scored two tries for the winners and Sean Glynn, Sam Holt, Ronan McCarthy, and Graham Kelly also scored tries. Michael O’Flynn kicked four conversions.

St. Mary’s won the big Limerick derby defeating Presentation at Rathuard 26-13. Matthew Ryan, Brian Neilan, Sean Markham and Stuart Lipper were try scorers for Mary’s and Sean Lyons kicked three conversions. Shane O’Brien replied with a try for Presentation and Mark Phayer kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Newcastle West kept their promotion hopes alive with a 29-16 away win over Youghal. The visitors led 10-8 at halftime with a try from Declan Moloney and a conversion and penalty by Alan Roche to a try by Scott O’Sullivan and an Aaron Daly penalty. Moloney scored a second try for the West Limerick side and Roche added a conversion and four penalties. Niall Clohessy replied with a try for Youghal and Daly kicked a penalty.

Bandon moved out of the relegation zone with a 15-13 home win over Killarney. Chris Hartnett, Tim Crowley and Pat Prendergast were Bandon’s try scorers. Padraig Hallissey scored a try for Killarney and Paudie Sheehan kicked a conversion and two penalties.

The games between Ballincollig v Castleisland, Muskerry v Ennis and Scariff v Kinsale were all postponed.

The top game in Division Three between leaders Dungarvan and second placed Killorglin was moved to Tralee because Killorglin’s ground was unplayable and it resulted in a 6-3 win for Dungarvan. Conor Foley kicked two penalties for Dungarvan and Dave Coffey replied with a penalty for Killorglin.

Carrick-on-Suir lost valuable ground when they went down at home to Fermoy 12-10. Shane O’Riordan kicked four penalties for Fermoy and Ross Clery replied with a try for Carrick’ and Charlie Boland kicked a conversion and penalty.

Waterford City have moved level with Kilorglin after their 19-9 home win over Charleville. Simon O’Hara scored the only try of the game for Waterford and Darren Walsh kicked a conversion and four penalties. Shane Corkery replied with three penalties for the visitors.

Douglas recorded a bonus point win over Corca Dhuibhne after a 24-19 victory at Moneygourney. Denis O’Driscoll, Dave Callaghan, Michael Coveney and Liam Hynes were try scorers for Douglas. Paul Byrne kicked two conversions. Sean Collins replied with two tries for the West Kerry Gaeltacht side and Billy O’Connor one. Kieran Collins kicked two conversions.

Cork Constitution defeated U.C.C. 48-22 in the Munster Seconds League at Curaheen Road. Matt Ross scored two tries for the winners and Dave Clark, Neill O’Connell, Ryan Hassan, Brian Vaughan and Alan Ross each scored tries and Peter O’Sullivan kicked five conversions and a penalty.

Thomond won the Gleeson League with a 16-9 win over Garryowen in the final.

Carrigaline and Dolphin will meet in the Junior Two League South final.
Carrigaline defeated Skibbereen 13-7 with a try from Aidan O’Reilly and a conversion and two penalties from John Tait.

Dolphin defeated Cork Constitution 14-10 at Temple Hill. Mark Long scored a try and three penalties for Dolphin and Brendan Monaghan replied with a try, convert and penalty for the home side.

Cobh Pirates drew with Kanturk 14-14 in the Mick Barry Cup. Jack Barrett and Tadgh Hawes scored tries and Hawes converted both.

Mitchelstown won their first ever trophy in rugby when they captured the Junior Three League South title after defeating Sunday’s Well 24-10. Mark Kavanagh scored two tries for the winners and Shane Lynch and Paudie Dennehy one apiece. Richard Barry kicked two conversions.

Crosshaven won the with a 24-0 home win over Fermoy.
