Weekend Junior Rugby Round-Up

The top three teams all win in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League, as the chasing pack in Division 2 fail to close the gap on leaders Bandon.

Newcastle West remain on top of Division 1 after their 11-3 home win over St. Mary’s. Sean Herlihy put the home side ahead with a penalty after fifteen minutes, but Sean Lyons had the sides level 3-3 at half time with a penalty on thirty one minutes. John Sheehan restored Newcastle West’s lead with a try mid way through the second half and a second Herlihy penalty nine minutes from time denied Mary’s a losing bonus point.

Clonmel closed the gap to a point on the leaders with their 29-8 away win over Galbally. Sean Bourke gave Galbally the lead with a penalty but Clonmel hit back with tries from John Gallagher, David Lonergan and Neville Melbourne, two of which Conor Cooney converted for a 19-3 half time lead. Lonergan extended Clonmel’s advantage with a try on 57 minutes. Barry O’Connor had a try for Galbally on 68 minutes but five minutes from time Melbourne scored his second try to secure the bonus point for the Tipperary side.

Muskerry got back to winning ways with a 30-25 home win over bottom side Kinsale. Muskerry’s cause was not helped when Jonathan Buckley was given a red card after eighteen minutes. Two tries from Joe Treacy, one by Buckley and a penalty try earned Muskerry a winning bonus point. Eoin Keohane kicked two conversions and two penalties. Richard Kingston, Pat O’Regan and Ciaran Keogh replied with tries for Kinsale and Barry McGorey kicked two penalties and two conversions.

Clonakilty moved into fourth place following their 20-13 home win against Kilfeacle. Scot Sheehan and Dave Lombard scored tries for Clonakilty, Joe Lee kicked two penalties and a conversion and Lombard also added a conversion. James Hogan and Dermot Carr replied with tries for Kilfeacle and Darren Lowery kicked a penalty.

St Senan’s proved too strong for Old Christians at Jim Slattery Park winning 34-17. Pa Ryan, Jake Egan, Fernando Gallant and Tom Galvin scored tries for Senan’s and Declan Rowe converted all four and added two penalties. Scot Vickery and Paul Whelan replied with two tries for the Cork side and Sean Meany kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Waterpark eased their relegation worries with a 46-12 home win over Tralee. Rory Hannon, Kieran Butler and Shane Burke each scored two tries for the winners and Kevin Phelan got one. John O’Brien added four conversions and a penalty. Ronan O’Sullivan and Ger Arthurs replied with tries for Tralee and Ciaran Crowley kicked a conversion.

With Second Division leaders Bandon idle this week, the chasing pack failed to close the gap. Second placed Castleisland made the short trip to Abbeyfeale but lost 16-13. Robert Browne scored a try for Abbeyfeale and Tom Hassett converted and also added three penalties. Mike Cronin replied with two tries for the Kerry side and Connie Reynolds kicked a penalty.

In the big game of the day the Tipperary derby between Thurles and Clanwilliam finished all square after the sides played out a 10-10 draw. Eoghan O’Dwyer scored a try conversion and a penalty for Thurles and Clanwilliam replied with a Davy Kinehan try which Niall Leahy converted and Brian Kissane also kicked a penalty.

Mallow also lost ground losing at home to Presentation 21-15. Cian Nagle and Conor Fitzgerald scored tries for Mallow and Michael O’Flynn added a conversion and a penalty.

A second half penalty by Sean Hayes earned Ennis a 3-0 home win over Killarney.

Waterford City had a 30-10 bonus point win at home to Newport. Tom Bowe, Ben Duggan, Darren Walsh and Michael Hayes scored tries for Waterford who were also awarded a penalty try. Aaron Foskin kicked a conversion and Darren Walsh a penalty. Declan Kett replied with a try for Newport and Philip O’Brien kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Ballincollig won the relegation clash at Youghal 26-7. Dave Lucey scored two tries for Ballincollig and Kevin Doyle got one. Doyle kicked two penalties and a conversion and Dave Power also added a conversion. Dean Maloney replied with a try for Youghal and Adam Maloney converted.

In Division Three Dungarvan have gone top after their 47-7 home win over Carrigaline. Seamus Keating (2), Cian Walsh, Kevin Sheehan, Alan McMahon, Maurice Power and Andrew Carey were Dungarvan’s try scorers and Dave Hickey kicked five conversions.

Douglas and Killorglin played out a 6-6 draw. Eoin Philpott kicked two penalties for Douglas and Fionn O’Shea and Dave Coffey replied for Killorglin.

Charleville defeated Fethard 27-5 in a game that also doubled up as a Martin O’Sullivan Cup quarter final tie. Ger Sheehan scored three tries for the winners, Shane Corkery kicked two conversions and two penalties and Peadar Cronin also added a conversion.

Bantry Bay and Scariff shared the spoils at the West Cork venue after they finished level 12-12. Bantry led 9-0 at half time with three penalties from Albert Green. Green added a fourth penalty in the second half and Scariff hit back with tries from Ronan Corry and Robbie Madden and a Conor McNamara conversion.

Cork Constitution defeated Kanturk 40-13 in the South Junior League. Alan Ross, Jim Ahern, Dave Fitzgerald, Sonny Dwyer, Jason Higgins and Kamil Fabuiski scored tries for Con’ and Higgins kicked five conversions. Alan O’Brien replied with a try for Kanturk and Stephen McAuliffe kicked a conversion and two penalties.

In the Junior Two League South tries from Alan Langford, Tom Rice and Conor Farrell and two penalties and a conversion by Ian Jones helped Cobh Pirates to a 23-22 win over Mitchelstown.

Bandon defeated Highfield 32-27 with two tries each from Jerry Crowley and Mike Murphy. Olan Crowley kicked three conversions and two penalties.
