Weekend Junior Rugby Round-Up

The holders in both the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup and Martin O’Sullivan Cup were knocked out at the first hurdle as the Cups in all three Divisions of the Junior League got underway.

Holders St. Mary’s made their exit from the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup at Kilfeacle 23-11. The Tipperary side scored four tries. Pat Ryan got two and JJ Cooney and Josh Featherstone one each. Darren Lowry kicked a penalty. Matthew Hickey replied with a try for the Limerick side and Sean Lyons kicked two penalties.

Two of the unbeaten sides in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League clashed at Ballyanly but it was the visitors Newcastle West who advanced defeating Muskerry 49-7. The winners scored seven tries with James Kelly getting two and Michael Culhane, Marley Sheehan, Sean Corbett, Declan Moloney and John Sheehan one each. Sean Herlihy kicked four conversions and two penalties. Liam O’Donovan replied with a try for the home side and Jonathan Buckley converted.

Skibbereen had to withstand a late rally against Waterpark before booking their place in the last eight with a 13-10 home win. The visitors led 10-7 at half time with a try from David O’Donoghue and a conversion and penalty by Kieran Butler. Veteran Declan Coppinger scored a try for Skibbereen and Ger Hurley converted. Hurley added two penalties after the break to clinch the victory, but the home side had to defend heroically in the final minutes as Waterpark laid siege to their line.

In the battle between the two promoted sides from Division Two, St Senan’s came out on top defeating Kinsale 30-7 at Jim Slattery Park. David Dunne, Fernando Gallant, Stephen Ryan and Fergal Lawler were try scorers for the Clare side and Declan Rowe kicked two conversions and two penalties.

The Galbally game against Cobh Pirates played under lights last Friday night was abandoned after forty five minutes due to Floodlight failure. A try from Aaron O’Flynn had the Pirates ahead 5-0. It is likely that this game will now be fixed for the 16th November in Galbally the date for the quarter final ties.

Old Christians received a walkover from Clonakilty.

The semi final draw for the Junior Clubs Challenge Cup is –

Kilfeacle v St. Senan’s,
Skibbereen v Old Christians,
Tralee v Clonmel.
Ties to be played on 16th November with a 2pm kick off.

Bandon defeated Crosshaven 49-0 in the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield in a game that also doubled up as a league game and this result sees Bandon hold a five point lead at the top of the Second Division. Despite playing into the gale in the opening half, tries from Nicky Walsh, Richard Walsh and a penalty try had Bandon 21-0 ahead at the interval. Two tries from Mighty Okafor in the opening ten minutes of the second half ensured the bonus points and they finished with two late tries from Christian Mulcahy and Oisin Healy. Richard Walsh converted all seven tries.

Extra time was needed to decide the Ballincollig v Abbeyfeale tie as the sides finished scoreless after eighty minutes. John Brown and David Collins scored tries for Abbeyfeale and Tomas Hassett kicked a conversion and a penalty for a 15-0 victory.

Ennis got revenge for last week’s league defeat by Castleisland as they ran out 15-10 winners. Elle Mundo and Brian Dolan scored tries for Ennis and Conor Dolan kicked a conversion and a penalty. Connie Reynolds replied for the Kerry side with a try, conversion and a penalty.

Thurles were 47-3 away winners over Presentation. Teddy Skeehan scored two tries for the winners and Andrew Bourke, Donnacha Duggan, Nicky Irwin and Eoghan Dwyer all crossed the white wash and Dwyer kicked four conversions and three penalties. Greg Airey replied with a penalty for the home side.

There were walk overs for Clanwilliam away to Killarney and Youghal at home to Newport.

The draw for the quarter finals of the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield is –

Waterford City v Mallow,
Youghal v Thurles.
Ties to be played on 16th November with a 2pm kick off.

Holders Douglas lost away to Scariff 20-8 in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup. A penalty from Eoin Philpott gave Douglas a 3-0 interval lead. Scariff hit back with a try, conversion and penalty from Conor McNamara, Conor Moloney scored a try and a penalty and Robbie Madden also kicked a conversion. Niall O’Connell replied with a try for Douglas.

Fethard, making their first appearance in the competition, defeated Carrigaline 17-13. Michael Power, Jamie McCormack and Kieran Power all scored tries for the winners and Declan Doyle added a conversion. Ray Donoghue had a try for the home side and John Tait kicked a conversion and two penalties. Fethard must now travel to Charleville next Sunday in the quarter final.

Fermoy defeated Bantry Bay 15-0 with all the scores coming in the opening half. Ian Pratt and Eric Stapleton scored tries and Dylan Lacey kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Dungarvan received a walk over from Killorglin.
