Weekend Junior Rugby Round Up

Richmond won the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup for the first time after their narrow 9-8 win over Kilfeacle in the final at Charleville.

Yet again Kilfeacle have lost a game by the narrowest margins but things could have been so different if they had converted a penalty effort in the final play of the game.

The Tipperary side led 8-6 at half time with a try from Josh Featherstone and a Mark Butler penalty to two penalties by Jonathon Ford for the Limerick side. Jeff McNamara put Richmond ahead four minutes from time with a penalty.

Galballygot themselves back in contention for honours in the race for the First Division title of the Munster Junior League with a 14-10 away win over Crosshaven. James Taylor and Ian Ryan scored tries for the County Limerick side and Sean Bourke converted both. Rory Hofler replied with a try for Crosshaven ad Kieran Doran added a conversion and penalty.

The top three sides in Division Two all recorded bonus point victories.

Leaders Mallow travelled to Bandon and defeated the home side 24-16. The visitors led 14-8 at half time with tries from Ray Roche and Graham Kelly, both of which Dave Walsh converted. Chris Hartnett replied with a try for the home side and Kevin South kicked a penalty. Neil Lucey scored a third try for Mallow and South added a second penalty to leave the score 19-11. As the game entered injury time Richard Whelan scored a fourth try for Mallow to secure a bonus point, but Bandon came back and had a try by Pat Prendergast but the conversion hit the upright to deny the home side a losing bonus point.

St. Mary’sremain in second place five points behind the leaders after their 42-7 home win over Muskerry. Matthew Ryan scored two tries for the home side and Robert Brockert, Darren Clancy, Sean Markham and Sean Lyons each scored one. Lyons converted four of the tries and added two penalties. Rob O’Mahony replied with a try for the Muskerry and Eoin Keohane converted.

Presentationare a further point behind but with a game in hand. Pres’ defeated Ballincollig 29-7 at Rathuard. Stephen Ryan scored two tries for the home side and Brendan Coleman and Ger Hall got one each. Shane O’Brien kicked three conversions and a penalty. Glen Murphy replied with a try for Ballincollig and Kevin Ryan converted.

Youghal’spromotion hopes received a big set back at Kinsale when they went down 34-12. The turning point in this game came early in the second half when Youghal lost some of their best players due to injury. The visitors led at half time 6-3 with two penalties from Aaron Daly to one by Paul Perez. Kinsale took full advantage of Youghal’s set back and ran in five tries three from Renaud Sergeree and one each by Peter Murphy and Joe Lyons. Perez converted three of the tries and Daly replied with two further penalties for Youghal.

Killarneygot back to winning ways with a 22-10 home win over Ennis. Padraig Hallissey scored two tries for the winners and Brian O’Leary one. Paudie Sheehan kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Castleisland moved out of the relegation battle with a 13-12 away win over Scariff. A try and penalty by JJ Casey gave the Kerry side an 8-0 interval lead. Mike Cronin added a second try after the break and James Kelly and Darren McNamara replied with tries for the Clare side and Kelly added a conversion.

Dungarvanhave extended their advantage at the top of the Third Division with a 19-9 away win over Douglas. Eoin Cunningham, Michael Darcy and Kieran Morrissey scored tries for the visitors and Conor Foley added two conversions.

Waterford Cityinflicted the first defeat of the season on Killorglin after their 15-10 home win. Dave O’Connor scored a try for the Suirsiders, who were also awarded a penalty try. Darren Walsh kicked a conversion and penalty. Killorglin replied with a try from Liam Griffin and a conversion and penalty by Dave Coffey.

Charleville’spromotion hopes received a big setback when Abbeyfeale defeated them 52-11. David Collins scored two of Abbeyfeale’s seven tries. Rory Dalton, Matt Feehan, Diarmuid Ward, Michael Roche and John Browne got one each. Roche converted all seven tries and also kicked a penalty. Peadar Cronin replied with a try for Charleville and Shane Corkery kicked two penalties.

Fermoycontinued their recent good run with a 12-3 away win over Dunmanway. The visitors led 7-3 at half time with a try from Shane Collins converted by Shane O’Riordan to a penalty by Dan Sweeney. John Roche scored Fermoy’s second try.

Corca Dhuibhnedefeated Kilrush 42-17. Eamon Hickson scored three tries for the winners, Mike Flannery two and Liam Flannery and John Devane got one each. Kevin Moriarty added a penalty and Ciaran Collins two conversions. Martin Hehir replied with two tries for Kilrush and Sean Sheedy converted both and Darragh Moloney kicked a drop goal.

Cork Constitutiondefeated Sunday’s Well 44-3 in the Munster Seconds League. Simon Hanbidge scored two tries for the winners and Sean Og Murphy, Eoin O’Donnell, Danny O’Shea and Conor Desmond got one each and Peter O’Sullivan kicked four conversions and two penalties. Padraic McSweeney was the ‘Well’s scorer.
