Weekend Junior Rugby Round Up

Plenty of excitement and drama in the six fifth round ties of the Munster Junior Cup with two of them needing extra time and late tries decided two others.

Clonmel ended Division One League champions Richmond hopes of a cup and league double with a 13-10 extra time victory at Richmond Park in the fifth round of the Munster Junior Cup.
Clonmel went ahead after ten minutes with a try from Ben Martin which he also converted. Richmond were level five minutes later when Ross O’Neill scored a try and Darragh Clancy converted.
Martin restored Clonmel’s advantage with a penalty after two minutes of the second half and three minutes into injury time Clancy kicked a drop goal to send the game into extra time. Martin made sure of victory for Clonmel with a penalty in the first period of extra time.

Kilfeacle also needed extra time to see off the challenge of a brave Scariff side 28-21. The teams were tied 11-11 at half time. Marcus O’Neill scored a try for the Clare side and Thomas Cronin kicked two penalties and Pat Ryan replied with a try for Kilfeacle and Des Ryan added two penalties. James Kelly scored a second try for Scariff and Cronin kicked a conversion and penalty. A try from Shane Casey and a conversion and a late penalty by Des Ryan for Kilfeacle sent the game into extra time.
Early in the first period of extra time Ian Burns scored a try for the Tipperary men and Des Ryan converted.

A dramatic try from Declan Coppinger in the final minute gave Skibbereen a lucky 13-10 home win over Mallow. Michael O’Flynn opened the scoring with a penalty for Mallow and Denis McCarthy levelled for the home side. Mallow were awarded a penalty try which O’Flynn converted to give the visitors a 10-3 interval lead. McCarthy kicked a second penalty for Skibbereen and with time running out Coppinger scored a try which McCarthy converted to book a place in the last eight for the west Cork side.

Cork Constitution needed two late converted tries to defeat Young Munster 17-6 at Temple Hill. Shane O’Leary opened the scoring with a penalty for the visitors but Peter O’Sullivan had Con’ level on the half hour mark. Brian Haugh gave the Limerick side a 6-3 interval lead with a penalty two minutes before the break.
Five minutes from time Con’ went ahead with a try and conversion from Sean Og Murphy and minutes later Conor Desmond made sure of victory for Con’ with a try which Murphy converted.

Holders Cashel proved too strong for an injury hit Crosshaven side at the Spafield with a 22-6 victory.
A try from Frank Kelleher and a penalty from Rory O’Connor gave Cashel an 8-3 interval lead. Kenny Donovan kicked a drop goal for the visitors. Michael Hickey added two tries for Cashel in the second half and O’Connor converted both and Crosshaven’s only reply was a penalty from Daryl Foley.

Old Christians proved too strong for Dolphin at Rathcooney emerging 28-6 winners. A try by Rob Stapleton and a conversion and penalty by Conor Mangan had the home side 10-6 ahead at half time. Paddy Moakley replied with two penalties for Dolphin. Shane Barry and Conor Quaid scored further tries for the junior club side and Mangan added a conversion and two penalties.

The line up for the quarter finals on March 11th is Clonmel v Thomond, Cashel v Garryowen, Old Christians v Skibbereen and Cork Constitution v Kilfeacle.

Newcastle West kept their promotion hopes alive in Division Two of the Munster Junior League with a 22-10 away win over Newport. The home side led 10-3 at half time with a try from John Paul O’Sullivan and a conversion and penalty by Shane Ryan. Alan Roche replied with a penalty for the visitors. Newcastle West had tries from John Sheehan, Niall Kennedy and James Kelly after the break and Roche kicked two conversions.

Presentation defeated Bandon 10-6 at Rathuard. Tom Quinn and Eoin Lynch scored tries for the home side and Cathal Crowley replied with two penalties for Bandon.

Muskerry still remain bottom of the table after they played a 14-14 draw with Ennis at Ballyanly. A try by Shane Murphy converted by Pat Dennehy gave Muskerry a 7-6 interval lead. Dylan Tynan O’Mahony replied with two penalties for the Clare side. A drop goal by Dave Murphy and a try by Conor Mahoney put Ennis 14-7 in front but Muskerry levelled with a try from Darren O’Farrell which Dennehy converted.

Carrick-on-Suir put a big dent in Killorglin’s Third Division promotion hopes with a 24-19 home victory. David Kiersey scored two tries for the winners and Ed O’Donnell one. Charlie Boland kicked three penalties. Darren Sherlock and Darren Curtayne replied with tries for the Kerry side and Luke O’Shea added three penalties.

Douglas collected maximum points with a 24-7 home win over Bantry Bay. Barry Hynes scored two tries for the winners and Sean Lehane and Paul Byrne got one apiece. Byrne kicked a conversion and penalty, while Pat Murnane replied with a try for Bantry and Jason Wycherly converted.

It was disappointment for Carrigaline at Musgrave Park as a last minute penalty from Mark Long gave Dolphin a 12-11 victory in the final of the Junior Two South League. Carrigaline led 8-6 at half time with a try from Sean Lucey and a penalty by John Tait to two Long penalties. Tait and Long exchanged penalties before Long’s dramatic penalty winner. Killian Walsh, Wayne Ryan, Tim Cotter and Billy Lynch all played their part in this victory.

A last minute try by John Coughlan converted by Robbie O’Flynn gave Kinsale a 12-8 victory over Ballincollig in the final of the George O’Connell Cup at Tanner Park. Ballincollig led 8-5 at half time with a try from Denis Daly and a penalty by Shane Murphy to a try by Ian Costelloe.

Highfield and Clonakilty will contest the Mick Barry Cup final after both came through their semi finals.

Highfield defeated Bandon 16-15 at Woodleigh Park. Chris Lyons scored a try for the winners and Dave Eustace kicked a conversion and three penalties. Colin O’Mahony and Colm O’Sullivan replied with tries for Bandon and Andrew Willis added a conversion and a penalty.

Clonakilty defeated Cobh Pirates 20-0. Padraig Kingston scored two tires for Clon’ and Cian Clancy one and Peter Deane kicked a conversion and penalty.
