Weekend Junior Rugby Round Up

The line up for the fourth round of the Munster Junior Cup was decided with ten games being played with no major upsets.

Holders Cashel began their defence with a 29-5 away win over Abbeyfeale. Fielding their second team this season in the competition, Cashel had two tries from Micheal Hickey and one apiece from Phil Ryan and David Lambe. Rory O’Connor kicked three conversions and a penalty. Robert Browne replied with a try for the home side.

Bruff defeated Presentation 8-3 at Rathuard to setup a fourth round tie at home to Cashel. Richard McAuliffe scored a try and penalty for the winners and Shane O’Brien replied with a penalty for Presentation.

Kinsale continued their good run with a 19-16 away win over Highfield. Shane O’Regan scored a try for the winners and Paul Perez kicked a conversion and four penalties. The home side replied with a try from Matty Kelleher and three penalties and a conversion by Darragh Masterson.

Newcastle West beat Youghal on the try rule 3-1 after the sides finished level 22-22 after extra time at the West Limerick venue. Newcastle West raced into an early 12-0 lead with tries from John Sheehan and James Kelly and a conversion by Sean Neville. A try by Alan Frahill-O’Connor and a conversion and penalty by Aaron Daly was not enough for Youghal who trailed 15-10 at half time. Neville added a second penalty for the home side.
A drop goal and penalty by Daly and a drop goal and penalty by Keith McCarthy saw Youghal take a 22-15 lead but minutes from time Sean McAuliffe scored a try for Newcastle West and Alan Roche converted to send the game into extra time. Both sides had their chances to win it in the extra twenty minutes but there was no further scoring and it is a home tie for Newcastle West against Shannon in Round Four.

Mallow had to come from 10-0 down at half time away to Old Crescent to setup a home tie with U.C.C. in the next round with a 12-10 victory. Sam Holt and Sean Glynn scored tries for the north Cork side and Dave Walsh kicked a conversion.

A late come back from Muskerry who trailed 23-6 to Scariff was not enough as the Clare side held out for a 23-21 victory at Ballyanly. The visitors led 13-6 at half time with a try, conversion and two penalties by James Kelly to two penalties by Eoin Keohane. Conor McNamara and Conor Minogue scored further tries for Scariff and Muskerry hit back with tries from Tyrone O’Regan and Tim Keating and Keohane added a conversion and penalty but failed with the second conversion to send the game into extra time.

Garryowen proved too strong for Bandon at Dooradoyle as they ran out 51-5 winners. Derry O’Connor scored three tries for the winners, David Sherry two, and Ronan Cross and Sean Horgan one each. Shane O’Brien converted five of the tries and also kicked two penalties. Des Prendergast replied with a try for Bandon.

Midleton also advanced to Round Four with a 27-0 home win over Ballincollig. Robert Colan-O’Leary, Sean White, Gearoid Collins and Diarmuid O’Sullivan scored tries for Midleton and Dave Hurley kicked a conversion and penalty and Paul Daly also added a conversion.

St. Mary’s defeated Third Division leaders Dungarvan 32-0. Brian Neilan, Mike Gallagher, Sean Markham, Brian Purcell and Stuart Lipper were try scorers for the Saints and Sean Lyons added a penalty and two conversions.

Ennis got the better of Charleville on a 24-6 scoreline. Brandon Grant scored two tries for the winners and Damian O’Connor one. Dylan Tynan-O’Mahony kicked four penalties. Shane Corkery replied with two penalties for Charleville.

Two of the main challengers to Richmond in Division One of the Munster Junior League lost valuable ground in their outstanding games.

Second placed Kanturk went down to Crosshaven 23-14 at Myrtleville Cross. The winners had tries from Daryl Foley, Darren O’Keeffe and John Geary. Foley added a conversion and a penalty and Kieran Doran also kicked a penalty. Kanturk replied with tries from John O’Sullivan and Pierre Malmasano and Darragh Meade converted both.

Galbally moved up to second place after defeating Skibbereen 8-3 in a hard fought game at the County Limerick venue. A try for Wayne McCarthy gave the home side a 5-0 interval lead. Darren Guerin kicked a penalty for Galbally ten minutes from time and Denis McCarthy kicked a late penalty for Skibbereen to earn a bonus point but the visitors will rue the amount of missed penalty chances.

Old Christians who were second last at the start of the day moved up to the top half of the table after their 28-11 away win over Clonmel. Three penalties from Aidan Tobin gave the Rathcooney side a 9-8 interval lead. Mike Sheehan scored a try for Clonmel and Ben Martin kicked a penalty. Martin put Clonmel ahead with his second penalty twelve minutes from time, but the Cork side hit back with tries from Stuart Lee, Darragh Daly and Conor Dineen and Tobin converted two of them.

Bruff won the McInerney Cup when they defeated Thomond 22-10 in the final at Annacotty.

Carrigaline began their defence of the Kelly Cup with a 29-3 home win over Cobh Pirates. John Tait scored three tries and two conversions for the holders. Stuart Donaldson and John Barrett got a try each and Ian Jones replied with a penalty for Cobh.
