Weekend Junior Rugby Round Up

Kanturk advanced to the fifth round of the Munster Junior Cup as Presentation defeated Newcastle West in the final of the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield in what was a very quite weekend on the junior front.

The meeting of the sides in second place in Divisions One and Two of the Munster Junior League was evident at Kanturk as the home side’s experience saw them advance to an away trip to Dooradoyle to face Garryowen in the next round of the Munster Junior Cup after their 29-12 victory over Second Division side St. Mary’s.
Kanturk dominated the opening half and build up a 24-0 lead by half time with tries from Michael O’Sullivan, Michael Twohig and Gary Piggott. Peter Earlie converted all three and also added a penalty. Mary’s came back into the game in the second half with tries from Niall Counihan and Rob Brockert with Sean Lyons converting one. The visitors felt they should have been awarded a penalty try but Kanturk withstood the rally and a late try by Earlie made sure of their place in Round Five.

Presentation’s recent revival continued when they won the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield at Charleville on Saturday with a 13-6 win over Newcastle West. A try by Kevin Donnelly converted by Mark Phair gave Presentation a 7-6 half time lead. Alan Roche replied with two penalties for the West Limerick side. Phair made sure of victory with two penalties after the break and now Pres’ will turn their attention to next week’s big promotion game against local rivals St. Mary’s.

Holders Richmond advanced to the semi finals of the Transfield Cup with a 14-10 home win over Garryowen. A try by Gareth O’Hanlon and two penalties by Jonathon Forde gave Richmond a slender 12-10 interval lead. Forde kicked his third penalty after the break to make sure of victory.

Youghal advanced to the quarter finals of the County Cup where they will face Kinsale after their 25-16 away win over Charleville. Roy McArdle, Dave Murphy and Keith Christopher McCarthy scored tried for Youghal and Aaron Daly kicked two conversions and two penalties. Charleville replied with tries from Dermot Brown and Shane Corkery and Corkery also added two penalties.

Ballincollig received a timely boost ahead of their crucial league relegation ties with a 15-10 home win over Fermoy in the quarter final of the O’Neill Cup. The Tanner Park side led 15-0 at half time with tries from Fergal Considine and Shane Murphy and Murphy kicked a conversion and penalty. Fermoy replied with a try from Stephen Dunne and a conversion and penalty by Shane O’Riordan.

Scariff began their Webb Cup campaign with a 22-10 home win over Richmond. Joe McGrath, James Kelly and Tom Cronin scored tries for the Clare side and Cronin kicked two conversions and Trevor Kelly a penalty. Richmond replied with tries from Pierce McCarthy and Alan Nealon.

Bandon booked their place in the semi final of the Mick Barry Cup with a 30-15 away win over Killarney. Colin O’Mahony and Colm Hurley each scored two tries for the winners and Andrew Willis added two conversions and two penalties. Paul Moynihan and Ollie O’Neill replied with tries for Killarney and David Treacy kicked a conversion and penalty.

Highfield took a step closer to a semi final spot with a 17-5 home win over Kanturk. Bobby Cussen, Colm O’Sullivan and Darren Walsh scored tries for the ‘Field and Dave Eustace kicked a penalty.

Kinsale took a big step towards a place in the final of the George O’Connell Cup with a 30-0 away win over Muskerry. Robin O’Flynn, Dave Kingston, Stephen Coleman, Ian Coughlan and Jeremy Coughlan scored tries for Kinsale and Ian Costello kicked a penalty and a conversion.

In the Under 21 South Western Conference U.L. Bohemian inflicted a first defeat of the season on Cork Constitution with a 10-3 victory at Annacotty.

Old Crescent joined Dolphin at the top of their section after the Limerick side defeated U.C.C. 5-3 at Rosbrien and ended the students’ hopes of playing in the All Ireland Cup.
