Weekend Junior Rugby Roundup

Cashel and Old Christians advanced to Round Three of the Sothern Section of the Munster Junior Cup as Ballincollig were crowned champions of the Third Division of the Munster Junior League.

After their 67-5 home win over Killorglin in the Munster Junior Cup last week, Dolphin were surprisingly beaten at home by Cashel 42-7. The Tipperary side scored ten tries. Pat O’Connor, Ciaran Murphy, Ross Mullane, Cormac O’Donnell, Aidan Barron, Brendan Cross, Andrew Wallace, and Fionn McSweeney were their try scorers and Conor Quinlan added one conversion. Sean McKeown replied with a try for Dolphin which Luke Abbott converted.

Old Christians had to come from 24-8 down to beat Mallow at Rathcooney 27-24. Mallow led 17-8 at half time with tries from Tom Gardner, Michael Sweeney and Sam Holt. Andy Cashman kicked one conversion. Dave Heaphy replied with a try for Christians and Stuart Lee kicked a penalty. Tim Fitzgerald extended Mallow’s advantage with a try and Cashman converted for a 24-8 lead. Christians rallied in the final ten minutes with tries from Dave O’Driscoll, Aidan Ware and Mark Gleeson and two conversions by Lee.

In Division Two of the Munster Junior League Newport won their first game of the campaign with a 16-8 away win over Ennis. Damien Forde scored a try for Ennis and Dylan Tynan-O’Mahony added a penalty.
Thurles defeated Killarney 27-0 with tries from Shane Moloney, Conor Cooney and Eoghan O’Dwyer. O’Dwyer added three conversions and two penalties.

Presentation recorded a 26-10 away win over Youghal with two tries from Alan Daly and one each from Greg Airey and Barry Twomey. Airey kicked three conversions. Ronan O’Sullivan replied with a try for Youghal and Keith McCarthy kicked a conversion and a penalty.

A try, conversion and penalty from Ciaran O’Connor was not enough for Killorglin who lost at home to Bandon 29-10.

In Division Three Dungarvan defeated Ballincollig 9-5. Conor Foley kicked three penalties to put Dungarvan 9-0 ahead but a try by Andy Coughlan for Ballincollig secured a losing bonus point that was enough to give them the title.

Abbeyfeale finished level with Ballincollig on points after their 45-0 away win over Fermoy. Mike Morrison, Kieran McCarthy, Jake Quirke, Daniel Ward Micheal Roche, Brian Murphy and Matt Behan all scored tries for Abbeyfeale. David Collins kicked four conversions and Behan one.

It is Ballincollig who go up as champions as a result of their 13-9 league win over Abbeyfeale back in December.

Tries from Brendan O’Connell and Graham Murray helped Douglas to an 18-0 away victory at Scariff. Eoin Philpott kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Clonmel defeated Kilfeacle 15-0 in the Junior Clubs Challenge Cup with five penalties from Conor Cooney.

St. Mary’s overcame Newcastle West 19-13. A try by Greg Barry and a conversion and two penalties by Ben Sergeant put Mary’s 13-0 ahead, Newcastle West hit back to level with a try from John Sheehan and a conversion and two penalties from Micheal Roche. Sergeant kicked two late penalties to send Mary’s through to the next round.

Cork Constitution defeated Bruff 26-22 in the quarter final of the Munster Seconds League with a last minute converted try. Robert Jermyn, Eamon Singleton, Yasin Browne and Mark O’Mahony scored tries for Con’ and Cyprian Jouve added three conversions. Andrew Breen, Gary Leonard were Bruff’s try scorers who were also awarded a penalty try. Barry Enright kicked a penalty and a conversion.

Kinsale and Cobh Pirates will contest this year’s Mick Barry Cup Final. Kinsale defeated Old Christians 33-11. Fintan Lawton scored two tries and four conversions for the winners and Padraig O’Connor, Dan McAleer and Mark O’Connell were Kinsale’s other try scorers.

In the other semi final Cobh Pirates defeated Mitchelstown 12-10. Ian Jones kicked four penalties for Cobh and Patrick Molloy replied with a try, conversion and a penalty for the home side.

Bandon defeated Clonakilty 26-0 in the Kelly Cup with tries from Gerry Crowley, Pat Prendergast, Giles Murphy and Ross Bateman. Andrew Willis kicked three conversions.

Cork Constitution were the only Munster side to win in the Frazer McMullen All Ireland Under 20 Cup quarter finals. They defeated Greystones 24-0 at Temple Hill. Sonny Dwyer, Darragh Moloney and Liam O’Connell scored tries for Con’ and Thomas Quinlan kicked a conversion and three penalties. Con will now face Lansdowne in the semi finals next Saturday at Temple Hill.

U.C. D. defeated U.C.C. 20-13 at the Mardyke and Bruff lost away to Terenure College 32-7.
