Weekend Junior Rugby Roundup

There were shocks in the Munster Junior Cup as Clanwilliam, Clonakilty, Clonmel and U.L. Bohemian booked their places in the semi finals.

The big upset in the quarter finals of the Junior Cup was Clanwilliam’s 34-0 home win over Thomond. Two tries by Gavin Ryan and a conversion and a penalty by Brian Kissane gave the Tipperary side a 15-0 interval lead. Ryan, Kieran Merrigan and Ian O’Mahony added second half tries and Kissane converted two of them.

U.L. Bohemian booked their place in the semi finals of with a 31-22 victory over holders Garryowen. Keith McManus, Finbarr Ryan, Ray Cunningham Darren Moloney and William Shanahan scored tries for the winners and Rob Buckley kicked three conversions.

Clonakilty defeated Cashel 21-5 at the Tipperary venue. Clon’ led 8-0 at the interval with a try from Eoin O’Neill and a penalty by Mark Purcell. Sean White scored a second try for the winners and Purcell converted and kicked two penalties. Pat O’Connor replied with a try for Cashel.

Skibbereen lost at home to Clonmel 26-13. The Tipperary side got off to a great start with tries from Brian Smith and John Long inside the opening five minutes with Conor Cooney converting both. Luke Hogan made it 19-0 after twenty minutes before Ger Hurley opened Skibbereen’s account with a penalty on twenty six minutes. Five minutes into the second half Hurley kicked his second penalty but Clonmel hit back with a fourth try from Brian Smith which Cooney converted. Shane Newman added a try and conversion for the home side ten minutes from time.

The semi final line up which are due to be played on 4th May will see Clanwilliam at home to Clonakilty and UL Bohemian will host Clonmel.

Thomond and St. Mary’s will contest the Webb Cup Final after their semi final wins over the weekend. Thomond defeated Kilfeacle 25-11 and St. Mary’s beat Garryowen 17-0.

Highfield and Clonmel will contest the Junior Two Cup South Final after Highfield defeated league winners Bandon 19-18. Highfield had two tries from Conor Barrett and Peter Duffy got one. Dave Eustace kicked two conversions. Rob O Sullivan replied with a try, conversion and a penalty for Bandon. They were also awarded a penalty try and Andrew Wills kicked a penalty.

Corca Dhuibhne defeated Listowel 42-3 in the semi final of the Galwey Foley Cup. Micheal Breathnach scored three tries for the winners and Mikey Flannery, Ciaran O’Coilleain and Cathal Begley got one each. Shane Griffin converted all six tries.

Midleton defeated Dunmanway-Bantry Bay 13-6 to retain the Junior Three South Cup. Philip Smyth and Morgan Colbert scored tries for Midleton Aaron Spillane added a penalty. Albert Greene kicked two penalties for the west Cork side.

Charleville reached the semi final of the McCarthy Cup with a 20-17 away win over Ballincollig. Mattie O’Neill, Johnny O’Neill and Shane Corkery scored tries for Charleville and Paudie Coughlan kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Mallow won the Paul Twomey Cup with a 34-12 win over U.C.C. John Forrest, Raul Legeunko, Conor O’Donovan and Cathal Clifford scored tries for Mallow with Clifford converting all four and also adding two penalties.
