Weekend Junior Rugby Roundup

Weather again disrupted the weekend’s schedule of fixtures with only seven of the thirteen games scheduled going ahead.

Clonmel had to field without ten of their regulars and it took a last minute penalty from Sean Herlihy to give Newcastle West the points on a 16-13 scoreline in their Munster Junior League Division 1 tie at the West Limerick venue. This win moves Newcastle West into second place eight points behind leaders Kanturk.
A penalty from Robbie Carroll gave Clonmel a 3-0 half time lead. Carroll added another penalty and converted a try by Tony Cantwell. Newcastle West hit back with tries from James Kelly and Niall Kelleher and Herlihy added two penalties.

At the other end of the table Galbally eased their relegation worries with an 11-3 home win over Clonakilty. The sides were level 3-3 at half time with Sean Bourke kicking a penalty for Galbally and Ciaran Calnan replying for the visitors. Phillip Moore scored a try after the break for Galbally and Bourke kicked a drop goal.

Skibbereen who were sharing second last spot in the table with Waterpark have moved ahead of Muskerry after their 15-10 home victory over the mid Cork side. The sides were scoreless after forty minutes and a try by Pat Rourke put Muskerry ahead two minutes into the second half. The lead only lasted five minutes as Mike Limerick got in for a try for Skibbereen and Ger Hurley converted. A penalty from Hurley and a conversion of a Ray Coppinger try extended the home side’s advantage. Dave Hennessy scored a second try for Muskerry to secure them a losing bonus point and they are now a point behind Skibbereen with a game in hand.

In Division Two Thurles edged out Presentation 24-19. Colm Skeehan, Shane Moloney and Brian Lyons scored tries for Thurles and Eoghan O’Dwyer kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Crosshaven eased their relegation worries with a bonus point 29-16 home win over Killorglin. Darren O’Donoghue, Dave Walsh, Thomas O’Donovan and Kenny O’Donovan scored tries for Crosshaven and Ian Smith added three conversions and a penalty. Noel O’Reilly and Mark Healy replied with tries for Killorglin and Trevor West kicked two penalties. This game also counted as a Junior Clubs Shield tie and Crosshaven will now be away to Clanwilliam in the quarter finals.

Abbeyfeale are the new leaders in Division Three after their 35-7 away win over Scariff. Tries from Adam Roche and Ralph Murphy both converted by Thomas Hassett had the visitors 14-0 ahead at half time. Daniel Ward, David Collins and Robert Brown also scored tries for the winners and Hassett converted all three. Darren McNamara replied with a try for Scariff which Eoin Collins converted.

Carrick-on-Suir defeated Charleville 16-3. David Casey scored a try for Carrick’ and Charlie Boland converted and also kicked three penalties. Peadar Cronin was Charleville’s scorer with a penalty.
