Weekend Junior Rugby Roundup & Results

The first weekend of cup action saw Clonakilty and Ennis cause upsets with away wins in the Challenge Shield and Martin O’Sullivan Cup.

Holders Kilfeacle began their defence of the Junior Clubs Challenge Cup with a 16-5 away win at Galbally. The Tipperary side were awarded a penalty try and Shane Luby kicked three penalties.

Kanturk edged out Abbeyfeale 18-17. Bernie Daly and David Fitzpatrick scored tries for Kanturk and Conor Cremin kicked a conversion and two penalties. Philip Daly replied with a try for Abbeyfeale and Stephen Daly and Tom Hassett each kicked two penalties.
Clonmel overcame the challenge of Newcastle West 24-5. Pat O’Connor gave Clonmel an early lead with two penalties before Newcastle West replied with a try. A John Gallagher try converted by O’Connor made it 13-5 at half time. A try by Luke Noonan and two Alex Sheehan penalties ensured Clonmel’s passage to the quarter finals.

Skibbereen continued their recent good run with an 18-12 away win at Youghal. Eric Donnelly, Kieran Shannon and Sana Govinder were the Skibb’ try scorers and kicked a penalty. Damian Kiely and Keith McCarthy replied with tries for Youghal and McCarthy kicked one conversion.

Cobh Pirates poor start to the season continues as they lost at home to Waterpark 34-19. The Pirates trailed 20-0 at half time but rallied in the second half with tries from TJ McSweeney, Noel O’Donovan and Eoin McSweeney. Ian Jones converted two. Waterpark had two tries from Ivan Kiersey and one each by James Kiersey, Isaac Mansfield Daly and Rory Hannon. Tom Kiersey kicked a penalty and three conversions.

A try, conversion and two penalties by Declan Rowe had St Senan’s 13-10 ahead at home to Clanwilliam. The visitors rallied andClanwilliam won 24-19 with Rob Phelan scoring a late try for Senan’s.

The quarter final draw which is scheduled for the 19th November is – Clanwilliam v Bandon; Kilfeacle v Kanturk, Richmond v Clonmel and Waterpark v Skibbereen.

There was a big shock in the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield after Clonakilty defeated St. Mary’s 51-25 at Grove Island. Clon’ had lost at the same venue a few weeks ago 32-10 in the league. Petrus Vorster, Stephen Cotter, Alex O’Mahoney, Shane Scannell, Tomas Óige Scannell, Olan Deane and Rob Howick all scored tries for Clonakilty. Mark Purcell converted five of the tries and added two penalties. Mike Gallagher, Mark Gibbons, Matt Hickey and Paul O’Loughlin scored tries for the Saints and O’Loughlin kicked a penalty and a conversion.

Holder’s Thurles defeated at the Tipperary venue on Saturday night. Eoghan O’Dwyer, Mark Cummins, Conor O’Hagan, Shane Moloney, Luke Kelly, Ciaran Ryan and Paddy Phelan were try scorers for Thurles and John Lillis converted six of the tries. Dan McCarthy and Dan O’Callaghan scored tries for Mallow and Jimmy Glynn converted both and also kicked a penalty.

Killarney recorded their first win of the season with a 26-10 home win over Waterford City. Jake O’Neill and Ben Duggan scored tries for Waterford.
The game between Muskerry and Castleisland was postponed due to a death in the Muskerry club and the tie has been rescheduled for Sunday 29th October.

The draw for the quarter finals which are scheduled for the 19th November is – Clonakilty v Kinsale, Killarney v Ballincollig, Muskerry or Castleisland v Crosshaven and Old Christians v Thurles.

Only one game went ahead in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup and Charleville who defeated Ennis in the opening league game in Division Three 18-10 two weeks ago lost at home to the Clare side 19-17. Charleville were awarded a penalty try and Cathal O’Carroll also scored a try. Odhran Hennessy converted and also kicked a penalty.

The quarter final draw for the Martin O’Sullivan Cup which will be played on 12th November is – Chorca Dhuibhne v Ennis, Dungarvan v Douglas-Carrigaline, Fethard v Fermoy and Killorglin v Tralee.
