Weekend Of Surprises on Junior Scene

The line up for the Fourth Round of the Munster Junior Cup was completed with the completion of all outstanding games. There were also some shock results in Division One of the Munster Junior League.

Two Junior Cup ties needed extra time. At Rosbrien Presentation caused a major shock with a 33-16 win over Old Crescent. The sides finished level 16-16 after eighty minutes. Craig Phayer scored a try for Pres’ and Mark Phayer converted and also added three penalties. Old Crescent replied with tries from James Cullinane and Jason Tong and Padraig Quinn kicked two penalties. Tries from Eoin Lynch and Ken Greaney and a penalty and two conversions from Mark Phayer saw the Rathuard side advance to round four where they will face Highfield.

The Woodleigh Park side booked their place with a 22-10 home win over Killarney. Fintan O’Sullivan, Richie Duggan and Jason Carton scored tries for the winners and Colm Downs kicked two conversions and a penalty. Damian Carroll replied with a try for the Kerry side and Paudie Sheahan kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Ballincollig needed extra time to defeat Bandon 20-12 at Tanner Park. The sides were level 7-7 at half time with Andy Coughlan scoring a try for Ballincollig and Kevin Ryan converting and Kevin Lucey replied with a try for the visitors and Cathal Crowley converted. Dave Power and Richard Walsh exchanged penalties before a penalty from Ryan and a conversion of a try by Rob Foulkes in extra time saw the home side advance where they will face a home tie against Muskerry after the mid Cork side received a walk over from Youghal.

Kinsale defeated Thomond 6-3. The sides were level 3-3 at half time with Peter Murphy kicking a penalty for Kinsale and Dermot Fitzgerald replying for the visitors. Murphy’s second penalty ensured victory for the home side.

Midleton will be Kinsale’s opponents in the next round after their 25-7 home win over Carrick-on-Suir. Diarmuid O’Sullivan, Ryan Lehane and George Glennon were Midleton’s try scorers and Robert Colan-O’Leary kicked two conversions and two penalties. Adam O’Loughlin replied with a try for the visitors and Charlie Boland converted.

Mallow eased into the next round with a 20-9 away win over Sunday’s Well. Andy Cashman kicked five penalties for the winners and John McAuliffe scored a try. Mick Lynch replied with a penalty and a drop goal for the home side and Nollaig Conneely added a drop goal.

U.C.C. overcame the challenge of Nenagh Ormond with an 18-9 away win. Charlie O’Regan and Tom O’Hare were try scorers for the winners and Steve Dinan kicked two penalties and a conversion. Aidan O’Dwyer replied with two penalties for the Tipperary side and Michael Walsh kicked a drop goal.

Ennis defeated Waterford City 17-3 with tries from Pat Harding and Brian Dolan and David Murphy converted both and also added a penalty. Conor Power replied with a penalty for the visitors.

Bruff also advanced to Round Four after they received a walk over from Newport.

Richmond have extended their lead at the top of Division 1 of the Junior League after their 29-5 home win over Clonmel. Gareth O’Hanlon scored two tries for the winners and Stephen Clancy and James Kelly got one each. Brian Mullins kicked three conversions and a penalty. Colm O’Connell replied with a try for Clonmel.

A late try from Kealan Buckley earned Kanturk a hard earned 15-10 away victory against Kilfeacle. A try by Alan Jones converted by Mark Healy gave Kanturk a 7-0 interval lead. Josh Featherstone tied up the scores with a try for Kilfeacle and Shane Looby converted. Healy and Looby exchanged penalties before Buckley’s late strike.

All four of the bottom five clubs in action all won. Bottom side Clanwilliam won their first game of the campaign when a last minute penalty by Richard Childs earned them a 9-7 home win over Cobh Pirates. Fergal Twomey scored a try for Cobh which Mark Chandler converted and Childs kicked all of Clanwilliam’s points.

St. Senan’s also caused a shock with a late try from Diarmuid McMahon converted by Philip Noone helped the Clare side to a 17-10 away win over Skibbereen. Jake Egan and Aaron Skerritt scored tries for the winners and Skibb’ replied with a try from Patrick Ryan and Steve Hansel converted and also added a penalty.

St Mary’s caused a surprise with a 27-14 away win over Newcastle West. A try from Matthew Hickey and a conversion and penalty by Ben Sargent gave the Saints a 10-7 interval lead. Alan Roche replied with a try and conversion for the home side. A Sargent penalty and a conversion of a try by Brian Purcell extended the visitors advantage. James Kelly replied with a try for Newcastle West and Roche converted but a try by Darragh Fitzgerald converted by Sargent denied the home side a bonus point.

A late penalty by Stuart Lee earned Old Christians a 10-9 away win over Waterpark. John O’Flynn kicked three penalties for the home side and Aidan Ware scored a try for the Rathcooney side which Lee converted.

Four penalties from Dan Clarke helped Tralee to a 12-5 away win over Galbally. Sean Bourke scored a try for the home side.
