Weekend Preview
11th April 2024 By Leonard Allen
Over a relatively quiet weekend, the final series of games in the Energia Women’s All Ireland League is down for decision, together with a handful of Junior games and the Munster Women’s Division 1 and Division 2 Cups.
UL Bohemian, who surrendered their unbeaten run in the Women’s All Ireland League, when they were defeated 43-22 by second-placed Railway Union in Dublin, will be looking to end the campaign on a winning note as they welcome Old Belvedere to Annacotty. The Limerick side hold a single point advantage over second-placed Railway Union at the top of the table and they returned from Dublin with a bonus point as they scored four tries.
Old Belvedere, who are third, go into the tie on the back of a comprehensive 50-12 home win over Ballincollig. UL Bohemian won December’s corresponding fixture 20-15 at Ollie Campbell Park, resulting in a losing bonus point for Old Belvedere. The Limerick side are due to meet Railway Union in the League final at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday May 26th, as part of a double-header with the Men’s All Ireland League decider.
There are two quarter finals down for decision in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup.
Shannon, whose last triumph was in 2015, go head to head with 2002 winners Kilfeacle at Coonagh. The winners will be rewarded with a home semi-final tie against Highfield, who last won the trophy in 2019.
Cork Constitution, who last won the trophy in 2018, lock horns with UCC, whose last triumph was in 1979, at Temple Hill. The winners will have home advantage in the semi-finals against Thomond, who last won the trophy over three successive years from 1989 to 1991 inclusive.
The Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Bowl Final is down for decision as Clonmel go head to head with Killorglin at Virgin Media Park. The result of this game will see a new name on the trophy since the competition was started back in 2008/2009 season.
Fermoy face Fethard at the North Cork venue in their final game in Division 2 of the Munster Junior League, a game that will decide who will be relegated along with Galbally-Mitchelstown to Division 3 next season. Fermoy only need a point from this toe to relegate Youghal, other wise it will be Fermoy whobe in the Third Division next season.
The Munster Junior Clubs’ Challenge Shield decider takes place at Jimmy Slattery Park, as St Senan’s lock horns with St Mary’s. Senans won this trophy back in 2013/14 season, but Mary’s have never won it.
In the Munster Women’s Division 1 Cup, UL Bohemian welcome Tralee to Annacotty, with Shannon-TUS awaiting the winners in the decider.
There are two ties in the Munster Women’s Division 2 Cup down for decision in West Cork as Bantry Bay host Thurles, who ran out 12-5 away winners over Midleton.
Clonakilty entertain Bruff in the other tie at The Vale.
