Weekend Preview 16th October

15th October 2010 By Munster Rugby

With no Senior club action this weekend the main focus is on the Munster Junior League.

The opening games in this League were played last weekend with the main contenders for honours in the First Division recording big wins. There were also one or two upsets across all three Divisions.

The top game in the First Division should be the meeting of Cashel and Clonmel. These sides met two weeks ago in the Challenge Clubs Cup semi final at Clonmel with the visitors booking their place in the final with a 24-17 victory. Cashel have home advantage this time and showed their scoring potential with a 76-12 away win over Ballincollig last week. Cashel looked the team to beat and Clonmel will have a big test if they are to avoid their first league defeat.

Defending champions Richmond set out a marker that they will not relinquish their title easily after a 42-15 away win over Old Christians. They are at home to Kilfeacle a side that surprisingly lost their local derby tie at home to Clanwilliam and it is difficult to see the Tipperary side returning home with anything.

Traleewho started with a big win at home to St. Senan’s travel to Waterpark and will have to be at their best if they are to be serious contenders.

Crosshaven who are still unbeaten this season failed to pick up a bonus point in their away game at Thurles and entertain Old Christians. The Rathcooney side are coached by former Crosshaven Coach Tommy Crowe and he will be looking for a big improvement from his charges after last week’s opener but Crosshaven will be favourites to pick up the points.

Clanwilliamboosted by their bonus point win over Kilfeacle will be confident of picking up maximum points at home to Ballincollig.

The other four sides who lost last week face each other. Skibbereen will be expected to bounce back with a home win over Cobh Pirates and Thurles who travel to St. Senan’s both can not afford to lose this game if they are to avoid being involved in the relegation battle so early in the season.

Mallow were the only side in the Second Division to collect maximum points last week and they face a stern test when they travel to Newcastle West, avenue where they have already lost this season in the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield. It should be a close contest and should give an indication of the North Cork side’s promotion chances.

Favourites Galbally who were far from impressive in their opening home game against Muskerry face a difficult game away to St. Mary’s. The Limerick Parish side caused a big shock with that 19-12 away win over Kinsale and will be confident of lowering the colours of their opponents.

Kinsale travel to newly promoted Killarney who received a big boost with an away win over Charleville and the Cork visitors cannot afford another slip up so early in the season.

Kanturkwhose lack of consistency has cost them over the last few seasons will hope to follow up last week’s win at home to Newcastle West with an away victory at Ennis.

Bandon who also started with a victory will be confident of making it a winning trip against Castleisland.

Youghal who had a narrow home win over Enniscould come unstuck at Ballyanly when they face Muskerry.

In the other tie home advantage should see Newport collect the spoils against Charleville.

Only two sides got maximum points in the Third Division. Dungarvan who picked up five points from their trip to Bantry are the free side this weekend.

WaterfordCitythe other side to have maximum points face the long journey to Corca Dhuibhne for the second time this season should return home with the points.

Presentation still celebrating their Martin O’Sullivan Cup success begin their campaign with a home tie against Douglas and should maintain their unbeaten run this season.

Scariff who recorded their first ever away win at Carrick-on-Suir last week will hope to follow it up with a home win over Killorglin.

Fermoyand Abbeyfeale should make it two wins out of two with home wins over Bantry Bay and Shandon respectively.

Carrick-on-Suirwill hope to bounce back to winning ways with an away trip to Kilrush.
