Weekend Preview

There are Charity Cup Finals in both Cork and Limerick that dominates a quite weekend of rugby action.

The Limerick Charity Cup Final sees holders Young Munster meet Shannon at Dooradoyle on Friday night, 7.15 kick off in a repeat of last season’s final which the Cookies won 12-9.
Young Munster are riding high at the moment as they top the Ulster Bank League going into the new year and will be confident of retaining the trophy. Shannon’s Coach Stephen Keogh could well do with a boost to bring some silverware back to the Parish men.

At Musgrave Park Dolphin and Highfield meet in the Cork final also on Friday night with a 7.30 kick off. Dolphin will be strong favourites to win this trophy for the twentieth time; their last success was back in 2002.
Highfield have only won this trophy twice and it is thirty six years since the trophy went to Woodleigh Park.
Dolphin will again give a lot of their younger players a run, while Highfield badly hit by injuries may find the going tough.

Despite the Heineken Cup game in Thomond Park on Sunday there are seven ties down in the Munster Junior Cup for decision.

Three of the games go ahead on Saturday. Newport who moved off the foot of the table in Division Two last week are at home Presentation and the visitors still challenging for promotion should come out on top.

Old Crescent and Fermoy meet at Rosbrien. Both these sides go into this contest on the back of defeats last week and odds must be on a home win for Old Crescent.

Sunday’s Well are at home to Third Division leaders Dungarvan and the West Waterford side are still unbeaten and could cause a shock and book a place in Round Three.

There are four games listed for Sunday at 2.00. High flying Kinsale will be confident of overcoming Killarney at Snugmore.

Douglas after recent away wins over Killorglin and Fermoy will face a stiffer test when they travel to Corbally to face St. Mary’s.

There is an all senior clash at Nenagh where Highfield are the visitors and after a big win in the opening round over Bantry Bay, the visitors will be looking for another victory.

Struggling Dunmanway will have it all to do at home to Bruff.

Holders Richmond put their Transfield Cup title on the line on Saturday when they entertain Shannon and Bruff and Thomond meet at Annacotty on Saturday in the final of the McInerney Cup.
