Weekend Preview 27.09.09

Eight Munster sides are in action this weekend in the opening round of the AIB All Ireland Cup with two local derbies down to be decided.

Two weeks after meeting in the ODM Munster Senior Cup Highfield and Thomond meet again but this time it is the Cork side that will have home advantage. Thomond won their initial meeting 23-11 and despite losing to Cork Constitution last week, the Limerick side will be quietly confident of advancing.

The other local derby is at Clonakilty where the home side take on Bruff. The west Cork side could badly do with a win ahead of their league campaign, but Buff should shade it.

The other Limerick side in the competition Old Crescent are the only side facing a long journey as they travel to Magherafelt to face Rainey Old Boys. A week before the league commences the visitors will be hoping to book their place in Round Two.

Nenagh Ormond will want to bounce back to winning ways after recent defeat by Cashel when they take on Portadown at home.

Midleton face a difficult task at home to U.C.D. and will have their work cut out to advance while Sunday’s Well will be hoping that home advantage should give them the edge at home to Malone.

U.L. Bohemian will hope to bounce back after last week’s surprising defeat by U.C.C., when they face Young Munster in the final of the Limerick Charity Cup at Thomond Park.

The Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup and Shield begin this weekend. The Division 1 clubs in the Munster Junior League will be contesting the Challenge Cup, while the Division 2 sides will play for the Shield.

Holder’s Cashel travel to Tralee and they will be hoping that they will have a full panel of players to pick from after their failure to fulfil their ODM Munster Senior Cup tie last week against Young Munster because of injury. This will be a good test for the Kerry side following their successful back in the top flight last season, where they finished runners up in the league. It would be no surprise if the holders were to make their exit.

Clonmel who have been threatening to make an impact in recent seasons will be confident of booking a quarter final place with a home tie against St. Senan’s.

Richmond are another side that should advance as they entertain Thurles.

Newly promoted Ballincollig will have it all to do at home to Skibbereen.

In the Munster Junior Clubs Shield there are two local derby ties. Kinsale after their victory over Youghal last week in the County Cup will fancy their chances at home to Bandon, while Muskerry who travel to Kanturk could put one over on their neighbours.

In the other ties home advantage could see Newcastle West get the better of Newport and Old Christians should prove too strong for St. Mary’s at Corbally.

The Martin O’Sullivan Cup quarter finals will be decided. Corca Dhuibhne following on their big win over Dungarvan last week will have it all to do when they play Abbeyfeale at Ballydavid.

Castleisland after their local derby win over Killarney lat week face a difficult tie away to Mallow.

Home advantage should see Carrick-on-Suir over come Killorglin and likewise for Charleville who entertain Waterford City.

The new format to the Munster Seconds League gets under way with four ties in North Munster and three in the South.

Highfield and Cork Constitution meet in the final of the Dennehy Cup at Woodleigh Park with the Temple Hill side fancied to win their eighteenth title.
