Weekend preview 30th January

There is plenty of action this weekend with the AIB All Ireland Senior Cup final between Cork Constitution and Garryowen dominating proceedings.

These two Munster sides meet at Dubarry Park, Athlone to decide this season’s champions. These clubs have met in many an epic final in the past with two meetings in the last three seasons in the AIB All Ireland League final with both sides recording a victory.

Recent meetings have been very close with last week’s league meeting ending all square at Dooradoyle 6-6. There should be little between them again this time but Con’s experience should see them edge it and make up for last season’s defeat by Ballynahinch in the final.

In the AIB All Ireland League Division 1A Shannon travel to St. Mary’s College. The Dublin side have lost their last two games and another defeat could see them in grave difficulty of making it to the semi finals. After a poor start Shannon have climbed into second position and will want to keep their recent good run going.

In Division 1B Young Munster’s who are in second place should consolidate their promotion spot with a victory over Dungannon.

U.C.C. travel North for the second successive week when they face Ballymena. They may not have it as easy as last week against Dungannon but are capable of returning home with the spoils.

In the Second Division promotion chasing Bruff face a difficult test away to Terenure College and cannot afford a slip up if they are to keep their challenge on track.

Thomond travel to Dublin for a second successive week when they face runaway leaders Lansdowne at the RDS and could be in for a difficult afternoon.

Old Crescent can ease their relegation worries with a victory at home to bottom side Greystones.

Highfield after their away win over Corinthians last week face a stiffer challenge this week when they travel to Dublin to face U.C.D.

Clonakilty desperately in need of points will hope to come away from Galway with something from their encounter with Corinthians.

Third Division leaders Midleton will hope to continue their good run with an away win against Barnhall, while Nenagh Ormond will be aiming to get back into the top four with a home win over promotion chasing Instonians.

Sunday’s Well after two narrow defeats will be aiming to bounce back to winning ways with a home win over Navan.

On Sunday Dolphin play Clontarf in a Division 1A tie at home and the Musgrave Park side boosted by a fine performance last week against St. Mary’s College will hope for a repeat showing.

There are fifteen Munster Junior Cup games to be decided on Sunday with one First round tie, eight in the Second round and six in the Third round.

The pick of these games should be the meeting of Cork Constitution and Waterpark at Temple Hill. The home side are always one of the favourites for this trophy, while this will be Waterpark’s first time playing their first fifteen in this competition in over thirty five years. With their league hopes gone, Waterpark will want to make an impact in this competition, but may find Constitution a difficult proposition.

U.C.C. travel to Thurles in a confident mood of reaching the fourth round. The Tipperary side are battling against relegation but on their day could put it up to the students.

Two Cork sides travel to Limerick to face AIL clubs. Shannon take on Cobh Pirates at Coonagh and home advantage should see Shannon advance, while Ballincollig will want to show an improved showing on last week’s display against Cashel when they visit Clifford Park to take on Young Munster.

There is one all First Division clash when leaders Tralee entertain Clonmel. Tralee would be expected to advance in this competition but Clonmel on their day could cause an upset.

Galbally who lost for the first time this season last week have a home tie against Thomond and will want to get back to winning ways with a victory.

Castleisland who lead their section in the Third Division could put one over on Second Division Bandon at the Kerry venue.

Corca Dhuibhne who have made a great start as a junior side face a difficult tie away to Muskerry and would do well to earn a draw.

Killarney another side doing well in the league make the long journey to Waterford City and could book their place in Round Three.

Carrick-on-Suir could overcome the challenge of Midleton at the Tipperary venue and another senior club facing a tricky away tie are Sunday’s Well who make the short journey to Kinsale.

Clonakilty who overcame Charleville in the opening round will face a sterner test this week when they host Second Division leaders Clanwilliam.

Ennis who are struggling in the Second Division will be looking to get a boost at home to Old Crescent.

There is an all Second Division clash at Youghal when Kanturk are the visitors and on current form it looks like a win for the visitors.

The one outstanding first round tie is the meeting of Shandon and Mallow at Whitechurch with the North Cork club expected to continue their recent good run with a victory.

There are three games down for decision in the opening round of the Munster Junior Plate. Nenagh Ormond will be favourites to over come Fermoy. Home advantage should also see Charleville get the better of Douglas.

While Killorglin boosted by their great win last week will fancy their chances away to Dungarvan.

Defending First Division champions Cashel can go back to the top of the table for the first time this season, with a victory away to bottom side Crosshaven but do need to collect a bonus point.

In Division 3A Abbeyfeale should prove too strong for Scariff.
