Weekend Preview

The weather looks like it will have a major influence on the weekend’s fixtures.

The AIB All Ireland Senior and Junior Cups dominate the weekend’s program. However the two Cup ties fixed for Cork have been postponed.

They are the ties at Temple Hill between Cork Constitution and Queens University and the tie at Musgrave Park between Dolphin and Galwegians.

Garryowen struggling at the foot of the table face a daunting task when they travel to Stradbrook to take on Blackrock College. The Limerick side who knocked out St. Mary’s College in the previous round can be a match for any side on their day but will have to show a big improvement on recent performances if they are to remain in the competition.

In the AIB All Ireland Junior Cup Munster’s only representative to win in the opening round Cashel have a home tie with Monivea. These sides have met twice in the All Ireland Provincial League in recent season with each side recording an away win. Cashel after a shaky start to the season have been putting things together in recent weeks. The Tipperary side will not be under estimating their Connacht opponents and if they play like they did away to Waterpark last time out Cashel should book their place in the last four.

The only action in the Munster Junior League is in Division Two and Three.

Clanwilliam who are top of the Second Division face bottom side St. Mary’s at the Tipperary venue. The odds must be on a home win, but Mary’s will prove to be no push over for the Tipperary side.

Galbally host Kanturk in what will be a dress rehearsal of the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield Final. Galbally booked their place in the final with a fine performance last week when they defeated a fancied Old Christians side 16-9. They are the only unbeaten side in the division so the north Cork side will have their work cut out to get something from this tie.

Old Christians travel to Youghal and both sides go into this game on the back of a few defeats. Old Christians will be anxious to get back to winning ways after defeats by Kanturk and Galbally, but Youghal on their own patch will be a difficult side to beat.

Muskerry entertain Kinsale at Ballyanly and both these sides are still in the race for promotion. Kinsale have been weakened by the emigration of some of their players in recent weeks and Muskerry will be a difficult side to overcome.

Bandon after winning their last two games will have their work cut out when they play hosts to Newcastle West. The visitors have only lost one game so far and will be no easy pushover.

The other tie in this Division sees Ennis at home to Newport. The Clare side have lost their three games to date while Newport who are eight points behind the leaders can not afford another slip up.

There is a big local derby in the Third Division when Section A leaders Castleisland make the short journey to Killarney who are in joint second place six points behind the leaders. The home side cannot afford a slip up, while Castleisland who have collected maximum points from their four games will be a hard side to overcome.

Presentation who are also level on points with Killarney in second place should pick up the points away to Kilrush.

Abbeyfeale should get back to winning ways with a home victory over bottom side Killorglin.

Scariff after winning their first ever Junior League tie last week will try and make it two wins on the trot when they play newcomers Corca Dhuibhne at the Clare venue.

Waterford City who head section B with a one point lead over the chasing pack, should pick up the points at home to Douglas.

Two of the sides in the hunt for promotion Carrick-on-Suir and Fermoy meet at the Tipperary venue. Carrick will start as favourites but this is a game that Fermoy must get something from if they are to be considered serious promotion contenders.

Charleville travel to Dungarvan confident of picking up maximum points against a side that have been struggling in the last few seasons.

Newcomers Shandon are away to Mallow and the home side will be expected to prevent the Whitechurch side from claiming their first victory at this level.
