Weekend Preview and Fixtures 18th September

It is more Cup action this weekend at all levels. Cork Constitution and U.C.C. will contest this season’s Cork Charity Cup Final on Saturday at Musgrave Park, kick off 2.30.

Cork Constitution will be bidding for their fortieth title and also a four in a row, last achieved by the Temple Hill side back in the eighties when they won five successive titles. Their only outing in this season’s competition was a 22-9 win over Dolphin last week a side they defeated earlier in the season in last season’s decider.

U.C.C. have not played in this competition for several years due to its early start but played this year and victories over Clonakilty and Midleton have seen them reach the final where they will be bidding for their twenty fourth success.

Despite being short several regulars Con’ will start as favourites but the students will test them in what should be a thrilling final.

In Junior Rugby it is the quarter final stage in all the three Junior League Cup competitions with the added bonus for the winners in the Junior Clubs Challenge Cup a place in the All Ireland Junior Cup.

The big game of the day looks like being the meeting of the junior league winners of the past two seasons when Richmond host Cashel. Cashel defeated Clanwilliam last with Pat O’Connor giving an inspirational performance while Richmond will be playing their first game having received a bye. The Limerick side won last year’s league encounter but will have to be at their best if they are to advance.

Holder’s Kilfeacle are at home to Crosshaven and will be confident of advancing. They saw of the challenge off Ballincollig last week 31-20 after a close first half. Crosshaven were surprising 29-14 away winners over Skibbereen where Liam Delaney contributed twenty four points. This will be a big test for the Seasiders but the Tipperary side should advance.

Clonmel who also received a bye last week are at home to Waterpark. The visitors easily brushed aside the challenge of Thurles last week 49-12 but will not have things their own way this time out.

The other tie sees Tralee at home to Old Christians and the Kerry side will be bidding to become the first Kerry club to play in an All Ireland competition. They will start as favourites but the Rathcooney side could push them all the way.

In the Munster Junior Clubs Shield defending champions Galbally will fancy their chances of booking a semi final place after their impressive 24-3 home victory over Kanturk last week. They face Killarney a side that defeated Muskerry 40-7 and this will be a big test for the Kerry side.

Newcastle West and Mallow who both won away from home last week meet on Saturday at the West Limerick venue with a 5.00pm kick off. This should be a closely fought tie with home advantage likely to decide it.

Kinsale host Youghal and both sides fancy their chances of promotion this season. Kinsale boosted by their 22-6 home win over Ennis last week start as favourites.

The other tie sees Castleisland at home to Charleville and the home side will be confident of advancing.

In the Martin O’Sullivan Cup Waterford City travel to Dungarvan and both sides put in impressive performances last week with Waterford knocking out the holders Carrick-on-Suir and Dungarvan edged past Fermoy with a last minute penalty. Waterford will be expected to book a semi final place which will see them away to Corca Dhuibhne next week after the Kerry side received a walk over from Shandon.

On the other side of the draw Abbeyfeale are at home to Scariff and will fancy their chances of advancing where they will await the winners of the Killorglin Presentation clash where the Limerick side should come out on top.

In the Transfield Cup U.L. Bohemian should easily brush aside the challenge of St. Senan’s at Jim Slattery Park.

Nenagh Ormond entertain Newport in the Garryowen Cup and home advantage should see Nenagh qualify for the next stage.

The Dennehy Cup semi finals should see holders Cork Constitution make their trip to Cobh a winning one while Ballincollig should also win away to Kinsale.

Garryowen and Shannon will try again to resolve their McInerney Cup tie, after last week’s tie had to be abandoned due to an injury to a player.

Richmond will fancy their chances at home to Thomond in their semi final clash.

In the O’Sullivan Cup semi finals Mallow take on Old Christians and Highfield are at home to Dolphin with both visiting sides expected to advance.
