Weekend Round-up
9th March 2014 By Munster Rugby
Kanturk win Munster Junior League Division 1 title as Kinsale are promoted from the Second Division and both Abbeyfeale and Ballincollig get promoted from Division 3.
In Division 1B of the Ulster Bank League there was a surprise win for Shannon who defeated promotion chasing Corinthians 10-5.
In Division 2A it was not such good news for bottom side Bruff who lost away to Seapoint 32- 5.
Kanturk were crowned Munster Junior League champions in a dramatic finish to the league. The Duhallow side defeated Muskerry 7-0 with a late try from Brendan Kelleher and a conversion by Stephen McAulliffe.
Meanwhile at Grove Island St. Mary’s the only side that could prevent Kanturk from winning the league were leading Newcastle West 8-6 with a try from Greg Barry and a Ben Sargeant penalty. However ten minutes of injury time were played due to an injury and in the 87th minute Sean Herlihy kicked his third penalty to give Newcastle West a 9-8 victory and end Mary’s title aspirations for another season.
Clonmel ensured they would finish in the top four with a 19-13 home win over Galbally. The home side led 14-0 at half time with tries from Alex Sheehan and a penalty try and both were converted by Brian Lonergan, Sheehan extended Clonmel’s advantage with his second try. A late rally in the final quarter saw Sean Bourke open Galbally’s account with a penalty and then he converted a try by Brian Childs. A late penalty from Bourke earned Galbally a bonus point which proved to be enough for the Co. Limerick side to retain their First Division status.
Skibbereen defeated Cobh Pirates 18-16 to ensure their survival in the top flight thanks to a late try from Cian Keegan. A try from Tom Rice and a conversion and three penalties by Mark Chandler gave Cobh a 16-10 half time lead. David Shannon scored a try for the visitors and Ger Hurley kicked a conversion and a penalty. Hurley closed the gap with a penalty and Keegan’s late try decided the match.
Mallow and Waterpark will be playing in Division 2 next season. Mallow lost away to Old Christians 11-10.
Two penalties from Stuart Lee to one by Andy Cashman gave the home side a 6-3 interval lead. Dave Heaphy extended Christians advantage with a try. A late penalty try converted by Cashman was not enough to prevent Mallow going down.
Clonakilty defeated Kilfeacle 25-21 in the other game in the top Division at the Tipperary venue. JD O’Mahony, Thomas Keogh and Cathal O’Regan scored tries for the winners and Ciaran Calnan kicked two conversions and two penalties. Kilfeacle replied with tries from Conor Hartigan, Sean McGrath and Darren Lowery and Gavin Heuston converted all three.
Kinsale will be playing in the top flight next season after they clinched promotion from Division Two with a 19-13 away win over Waterford City. Richard Kingston, Damien Kozik and Peter Murphy were Kinsale’s try scorers and Sean Kingston kicked two conversions. Sean O’Mahony scored a try for the home side and Micheal Hayes kicked a conversion and two penalties.
Tries from Colm Conway and Mikey Griffin, both converted by Trevor West were not enough for Killorglin who lost at home to Youghal 18-14 and will now be playing in the Third Division next season.
Three penalties from Paudie Sheahan helped Killarney to a 9-7 home win over bottom side Newport.
Both Abbeyfeale and Ballincollig clinched promotion from the Third Division and the only matter to be decided is who will finish top.
Abbeyfeale currently hold the advantage after their 30-0 bonus point away win over Dunmanway-Bantry Bay. Daniel Ward, Alan Roche, Brian Murphy, Thomas Hassett and Liam McHenry scored tries for Abbeyfeale and Hassett added a conversion and a penalty.
Ballincollig defeated Douglas 17-13 to go into second spot a point behind the leaders but with a game in hand. Kevin Doyle converted tries from Ian O’Malley and a penalty try and also kicked a penalty. Eoin Philpott replied with a try, conversion and two penalties for Douglas.
Charleville defeated Fermoy 22-0 with two tries from Sean O’Sullivan and one by Ger Sheehan. Peadar Cronin converted two and also landed a penalty.
A Brendan O’Connor try helped Cobh Pirates to a 5-3 home win over Mallow in the South Junior 2 Cup.
Mitchelstown defeated Cashel 32-0. Morgan Fox scored two tries for the winners and Pat Molloy and Chris O’Donoghue got one each with Molloy kicking three conversions and two penalties.
