Weekend Round Up

Promotion for Galbally from the Second Division of the Munster Junior League and relegation for Ballincollig from the top flight in a quite weekend of action on the Junior front.

The big game of the weekend between Cashel and Crosshaven in the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup Final fixed for Charleville was called off due to a pending appeal by Crosshaven.

Ballincollig’s stay in the First Division of the Munster Junior League ended at Tanner Park, when they were defeated by Tralee 24-15. In a closely fought opening half Tralee held a 14-12 advantage at half time. Gareth Walsh scored two tries for the Kerry side which he converted. Ballincollig replied with tries from Cal Barrett and Glen Murphy and a conversion from Kevin Ryan. Jason Thong scored a third try for Tralee after the break and Walsh converted and also added a penalty. Ballincollig’s only reply was a penalty from Ryan.

Two years after winning promotion from the Third Division for the first time in the club’s history, Galbally will be playing in the top flight next season after they secured promotion from the Second Division with a 23-9away win over Castleisland. Tries from Tom Davern and Kevin Casey both converted by Darren Guerin gave Galbally a 14-9 half time lead. Mark Connolly replied with three penalties for the home side. Guerin added three penalties after the break to secure Galbally’s promotion.

Kanturk kept their promotion hopes on track with a 25-0 home win over Mallow, a result that ended Mallow’s promotion aspirations for another season. Kanturk led 6-0 at half time with two penalties from Darragh Meade. Tries by Paul Cotter, Meade and Peter Earley with Meade and Earley converting their own tries to leave the Duhallow side nine points ahead of third placed Newcastle West.

Bandon secured their place in the Second Division for next season with a 26-20 away win over Youghal on Patrick’s Day. The visitors raced into a 26-3 lead by half time with Eoin O’Donovan scoring two tries and Richie Powell and Robert Wilmott getting one each. O’Donovan converted three of the tries, Stephen Kelly replied with two tries for Youghal and Gary McArdle one and Keith McCarthy kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Muskerry are still in relegation trouble after their 17-12 away defeat by Killarney. A last minute try by Eoin Corcoran secured Muskerry a losing bonus point which sees them two points ahead of bottom side Charleville with one game remaining. D.J. O’Leary gave Muskerry a 7-3 half time lead with a try and conversion but the Kerry side hit back with a try from Paul O’Sullivan and four penalties by Paudie Sheahan.

With Presentation getting a walk over from Corca Dhuibhne in the Third Division, the battle for the second promotion place now is between Scariff and Waterford City after both sides secured maximum points. Scariff are three points ahead of Waterford City.

The Clare side defeated Shandon 28-19 at Whitechurch. Shandon led 10-7 at half time with a try from Brian Humphries and a conversion and penalty by Conor Buckley. Robbie Madden scored a try for the Clare side and James Kelly converted. A penalty try, a second Madden try and one by Barry Gibbons all converted by Kelly secured victory for the visitors. Buckley added three penalties for the home side.

Waterford City ended Fermoy’s promotion hopes with a 42-10 victory at Kilbarry. Three tries from Rory Hughes and a conversion by Aaron Foskin had Waterford 17-3 ahead at the break. Shane O’Riordan replied with a penalty for the visitors. Tom Bowes and Hughes each scored two tries in the second half and Jason Power one with Foskin adding two further conversions. Eddie O’Connell replied with a try for Fermoy which O’Riordan converted.

Douglas shared the spoils with Kilrush at Moneygourney when they played out a 15-15 draw. Denis O’Driscoll, Dave Callaghan and Padraig McSweeney were try scorers for Douglas.

Dungarvan recorded a 17-8 away win over Carrick-on-Suir. Eoin Cunningham scored a try for the winners and Conor Foley kicked four penalties.

Kilfeacle needed extra time to beat Clonmel 27-23 in a thrilling Garryowen Cup game at Kilfeacle. A try by Jack O’Sullivan and a Shane Luby conversion and penalty had the home side 10-0 ahead at half time. Gerry Mann scored a try for Clonmel before Luby and Conor Cooney exchanged penalties. A second try by Mike Sheehan converted by Brian Lonergan put Clonmel 15-13 ahead. Kilfeacle regained the lead with a try from Alan Noonan which Luby converted. Kieran Lyons sent the game into extra time with a try.

Only three games went ahead in the Junior Two Cup South with U.C.C. edging out Kanturk 37-31 in an exciting tie at the North Cork venue.

Holders Cobh Pirates defeated Skibbereen 12-3, Fergal Twomey and Alan Langford scored tries for the Pirates and Cian Connolly converted the second try in the last minute of the game. Shane Hurley kicked a penalty for the home side.

Tralee defeated Carrigaline 37-3. Gordon Kerins, Eoin Murphy, Eoin Healy and Simon Behan scored tries for the winners and Kerins converted all four tries and added three penalties.

Having won the Mick Barry Cup a week ago Old Christians were surprisingly beaten by Kenmare 26-22 in the Dave Dineen Cup. The Rathcooney side had to play with fourteen players for most of the game after one of their players was shown a red card early in the opening half. JP Murphy and Richard Finn were Kenmare’s try scorers and Darren Breen kicked two conversions and four penalties. Gavin Murphy and Alan Duggan replied with tries for Old Christians and Conor Mangan kicked four penalties.

Crosshaven booked their place in the Avonmore Milk Munster Under 19 League after a 6-3 home win over Thomond. Dermot Fitzgerald gave Thomond a 3-0 interval lead but two penalties by Cian McGovern saw Crossahven through to next week’s final at Thomond Park.

The Avonmore Milk Munster Under 17 Final will be between Shannon and Waterpark. Shannon booked their final place with a 13-8 win over Old Crescent. Waterpark and Sunday’s Well played out an 8-8 draw at Ballinakill but it is Waterpark who go through on the first try score rule.
