Highfield RFC secured promotion to Division 1B with victory over Cashel.

There were unexpected results from the opening games of the Sporting Limerick Charity Cup, as all three home sides advanced to the semi-finals.

Bruff claimed a 6-5 home win over Garryowen at Kilballyowen Park. Scrum-half Florent Riquet kicked two penalties for the home side in the opening half while Brian Fitzgerald replied with a try for the Light Blues.

Old Crescent defeated Shannon in a fiery contest at Rosbrien, 20-14, which saw a Shannon player red carded after thirty minutes and three others yellow carded in the opening half.

Two penalties from Ronan McKenna gave Crescent a 6-0 interval lead. Tries from Jack O’Neill and Niall Hardiman for Old Crescent and McKenna converted both to make it 20-0 after 54 minutes.

Shannon finished strongly with tries from Jamie McGarry and Kelvin Browne with Ben Daly converting both.

In the all Division 2A affair, Nenagh Ormond saw off the challenge of UL Bohemian 26-16. Keith Quigley, Cian Ryan, Kevin O’Gorman and Kevin O’Flaherty scored tries for Nenagh and Conor O’Brien converted three of the tries.

Mike Greene scored one of the visitors tries and Harry Byrne added two penalties.

Highfield booked their place in the Cork Charity Cup final where they will face either Cork Constitution or Dolphin after their 17-12 away win at Cashel. Gavin O’Leary scored two tries for the winners and Luke Kingston got one. Paddy O’Toole added a conversion.

Cashel replied with tries from Brendan Cross and Josh Pickering with Aidan McDonald converting the first try.

Clonmel playing their first Senior competitive game lost to Sunday’s Well 17-16 in the Cork Charity Shield semi-final at the Tipperary venue.

The winning score a penalty from Brian Derham came in the fifth minute of extra time. Josh Barnes scored a try for the ‘Well and Derham kicked four penalties. Greg Carroll was Clonmel’s try scorer and Darren Cass kicked a conversion and three penalties.
