Weekend Round Up

It was Cup day across all three divisions of the Munster Junior League.
In the game of the round Newcastle West had to come from behind to defeat Thomond 24-11 in the Junior Clubs Challenge Cup. Eoin Sherlock put Thomond ahead with two penalties but a penalty from Sean Herlihy and a penalty try had Newcastle West ahead 10-6 at half time. Wayne Mullaney restored Thomond’s lead with a try but intercept tries from Sean Neville and Darragh Fox both converted by Herlihy gave the visitors victory.
Newcastle West will face defending champions Richmond in the next round after Richmond snatched a late 18-15 win at home to Galbally.
Brian Mullins opened the scoring with a penalty for Richmond but a try from Frank Cussen and a John Kerins penalty put the visitors 8-3 ahead. A try from Sean Bennett converted by Mullins restored Richmond’s advantage but an intercept try by Pat O’Donoghue converted by Kerins had Galbally ahead 15-10 at half time.
Darragh Joyce had the sides level with a try and a late Mullins penalty decided the contest.
Mallow also continued their good start with a 27-11 away win at Skibbereen. Sam Cronin and Peter Cosgrove scored tries for Mallow and David Breen converted both and kicked two penalties. Their other score was a penalty try. James O’Driscoll replied with a try for Skibbereen and Mathew Bushe added two penalties.
Bandon got revenge for their opening day league defeat in Clonakilty when they overcame their West Cork rivals in Bandon on Thursday night 21-10. Ciaran Roberts scored two tries for the winners and Tom Ferguson got one. Ben Ridgeway converted all three tries. Aaron Hayes was Clonakilty’s try scorer and Graham Murphy converted and also added a penalty.
Kilfeacle proved too strong for St. Senan’s at Jim Slattery Park running out 22-5 winners. Killian Noonan, Kevin Doyle and Cormac Ryan scored tries for Kilfeacle with Willie Staunton kicked two conversions and a penalty. Fernando Gallant replied with a try for Senan’s.
Abbeyfeale proved too strong for a weakened St Mary’s side at the west Limerick venue as they ran out 55-0 winners. Shane O’Connell, Sean Scannell, James Murphy, Pa Brisbane, Philip Collins, Sean Bates and Derry O’Connor scored tries for Abbeyfeale. O’Connor converted all seven tries and added two penalties.
The Clanwilliam v Waterpark game was postponed due to bereavement in the Clanwilliam club and Crosshaven received a walk over from Charleville.
The quarter-final draw for the Junior Clubs Cup is – Abbeyfeale v Mallow, Clanwilliam or Waterpark v Crosshaven, Bandon v Kilfeacle and Richmond v Newcastle West.
Only one of the four scheduled ties in the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield went ahead with Ballincollig beating Fethard 17-10 at Tanner Park. Sam Kiely, Darragh O’Brien and Billy Newman scored tries for Ballincollig and Charlie Boland kicked one conversion. Fethard replied with a try from Cathal Meagher and Josef O’Connor converted and added one penalty.
Kanturk, Muskerry and old Christians received walk overs from Fermoy, Tralee and Castleisland respectively.
The quarter-final line up is – Ballincollig v Thurles, Kanturk v Dungarvan, Kinsale v Old Christians and Muskerry v Cobh Pirates.
In the Martin O’Sullivan Cup Douglas-Carrigaline lost at home to Waterford City 57-0. Aidan Power and Cormac Collins scored two tries each for Waterford and Andrew Condron, Danny Collins, Tom Bowe, Adam Browne, Mark Hayes and Cian Foskin were the other try scorers.
Ennis defeated Chorca Dhuibhne 24-12. Frank Coffey, Niall O’Brien, Stephen Dolan and Cian Clifford scored tries for Ennis. Clifford and Sean Hayes each kicked a conversion. Seamus Moynihan and Conor Flannery replied with tries for the west Kerry Gaeltacht side and Moynihan kicked a conversion.
The draw for the quarter-finals are – Scariff v Killarney, Ennis v Dunmanway, Youghal v Killorglin and Waterford City v Mitchelstown.
In Division 1 of the Munster Senior League U.C.C. defeated Young Munster 27-19 at Tom Clifford Park. Mark McLoughlin scored three tries, Killian Coughlan got two and Eoin Monahan kicked one conversion.
Highfield defeated Garryowen at Woodleigh Park 22-18.
Sunday’s Well lost at home to U.L. Bohemian 31-22 with Neville O’Donoghue, Cormac Kelleher, Jamie Downey and Andrew Mintern scoring tries for the ‘Well and Michael Collins kicked a conversion.
Killorglin defeated Killarney 31-15 to win the McElligott Cup and the last time they won that trophy was back in 1935. Timmy Lynch, Josh Morell and Seamus Doyle scored tries for the winners and Luke O’Shea kicked two conversions and four penalties.
U.L. Bohemian defeated Blackrock College 38-15 in the Women’s All Ireland League. Sarah Quinn scored two tries for the winners. Rachel Allen, Stephanie Nunan, Edel Murphy and Emma Dolan were the other try scorers and Nicole Fitzgerald kicked four conversions.
