Garryowen were shocked in the Bateman Cup, as Tipperary sides Clonmel and Nenagh Ormond progress to the semi-finals of the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup.
Bandon and Old Christians have gone top in their respective Divisions in the Munster Junior League, as four games were postponed due to the weather.
There was a big shock at Dooradoyle as Division 2A side Instonians reached the final of the Bateman Cup, where they will face Lansdowne, after a 24-19 victory. The Ulster side led 12-5 at half time with Des Fitzgerald scoring the Garryowen try. Instonians extended their lead to 17-5 but two yellow cards saw the visitors reduced to 13. Garryowen were awarded two penalty tries to lead 19-17, but a late converted try for Instonians saw them book their final place.
In the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup Nenagh Ormond proved too strong for Shannon at Coonagh winning 45-5 with two tries from Willie Coffey and further tries by Matthew Burke, John O’Flaherty, Angus Blackmore, Brian O’Rourke and Charlie O’Doherty. O’Doherty converted five of the tries. David Smith replied with a try for Shannon who trailed 24-0 at half time.
Clonmel booked their semi-final spot with a 43-12 win over U.L. Bohemian at Annacotty. Freddie Davies and Tom O’Dea each scored two tries for Clonmel. Dylan Cadogan and Luke Hogan also scored tries. Josef O’Connor kicked five conversions and a penalty. Liam Shanahan and Luca Cleary replied with tries for UL Bohs, and Seamus added a conversion.
Old Crescent and Young Munster will join the Tipperay sides in next weeks semi-finals draw.
With Thomond’s game away to Newcastle West being a victim of the weather, Bandon have taken over the leadership in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League, after their 19-10 home win against Richmond. The home side who led 13-0 at halftime had a try by Gearoid O’Leary and Zack Canniffe converted and kicked four penalties. Paul O’Shea replied with a try for Richmond and Brian Mullins converted and also added a penalty.
Kilfeacle moved up to second place after their 44-27 away win at Muskerry. Kevin Kinnane and Gavin Heuston each scored two tries for the Tipperary side and James Hogan, Muiri Lambe and Kevin Doyle got one each. Liam Heuston kicked three conversions and a penalty. Cathal Dennehy replied with two tries for Muskerry and Colm Heelan and Lewis Grice got one apiece. Rob Cahill kicked two conversions and a penalty.
A last minute penalty by Jack Flanagan earned Thurles a bonus point home win against fourth placed Sunday’s Well. Seamus Holohan, Colin Nolan, John Shaw, Sonny Dwyer and Flanagan were the try scorers for Thurles who led 26-8 at half time. Flanagan kicked four conversions. Cormac Kelleher (2), Andrew O’Callaghan, Mike McCarthy and Alex Lane were the Well try scorers. Ciaran Maguire kicked three conversions and a penalty.
Clonakilty eased their relegation worries with a 32-7 home win against St. Mary’s. Kieran Howlin scored two tries for Clon’ and Ryan O’Donnell, Chris Walton and Henry Miles also crossed the whitewash. Ron Howick kicked two conversions and a penalty. Tyrone O’Halloran was Mary’s try scorer and Adam Guerin converted.
Old Christians 24-5 home win over Castleisland, sees them go to the top of Division 2, as leaders Clanwilliam’s game away to Fermoy was postponed. Cian Walsh, Mark Gleeson, Oscar Clarke and Rory Casey scored tries for the Rathcooney side and John Marnell kicked two conversions. Shane Browne replied with a try for Castleisland.
Ballincollig lost valuable ground as they lost away to St. Senan’s 30-24. James McNamara, David Flynn and Brian Collins (2) were the Senan’s try scorers and Declan Rowe kicked two conversions and two penalties. Diarmuid Phelan, Matt Bourke and Mick O’Shea replied with tries for Ballincollig and Phelan converted all three and also added a penalty.
Ennis were 57-19 home winners against Tralee. Cian Guilfoyle and Oisin Morgan each scored two tries for Ennis and Matthew McNamara, Joe Connaughton, Callum Barrett and Jack Colleran got one apiece. Dylan Kenny converted seven of the tries and also added a penalty. Fionn de Quadros, Liam Gannon and Martin Stack replied with tries for Tralee. Gavin Peevers kicked two conversions.
Kinsale defeated Charleville 36-25 at the North Cork venue with tries from Dan Horgan, Brian O’Donnell, Joey O’Callaghan, Dan Graham and Faelan Stewart. Dylan Lacey kicked four conversions and a penalty. Eoin McNamara replied with two tries for Charleville and Jessie Smith and Darragh Browne got one each. Kian Smith kicked a conversion and a penalty.
Waterpark defeated Abbeyfeale 52-7. Willie Walsh scored two tries, seven conversions and a penalty. Ben Wallis, Peter Traynor, David Pierce, Luke Murphy and Luke Cronin got a try each. Jimmy Kelly scored two tries for Abbeyfeale and Caomhin Barron added a conversion.
Cobh Pirates defeated Fethard 22-13 with tries from Ben Kennedy, Cian McNamara and Kevin Murphy. Billy Cain kicked two conversions and a penalty. Rob Wall scored a try for Fethard and Peter Wall converted and kicked two penalties.
The two top sides in Division Three lost their unbeaten records. Leaders Chorca Dhuibhne lost away to Killarney 26-10. Sam Buckley scored two of Killarney’s tries and Diarmuid Carr and Tom Chambers got one each. Donnchadh Grealy and Ciaran O’Brien each added a penalty. Gearoid Breathnach replied with a try for the West Kerry side and Tomás Ó Sé kicked a conversion and a penalty.
Carrick-on-Suir are the only unbeaten side in this Division after they defeated Youghal 22-14 to move up to second place a point behind the leaders. Fionn Barry contributed two tries, two conversions and a penalty of Carrick’s tally, with Sean Mullarkey also scoring a try. Chris O’Brien replied with two tries for Youghal and Nathan O’Halloran converted both.
Killorglin defeated Waterford City 17-7 with two tries from Stephen Cotter and one by Cillian Riordan. Luke O’Shea added one conversion.
Scariff moved off the foot of the table with a 15-3 home win against Dungarvan. Donal Moloney and Martin Daly scored tries for Scariff and Marc Loughran kicked a penalty and a conversion. David Hickey replied with a penalty for Dungarvan.
