Weekend Roundup And Results

Charity Cup action dominated this weekend’s program as several local Junior competitions also got under way.

Holders Old Crescent began their defence of the Sporting Limerick Charity Cup with a 31-12 home win over Bruff. Tries from Peter Murray, David Rickard, and Jordan Higgins along with two conversions by Ronan McKenna had the home side 19-0 at the interval. Ronan Reynolds and Jack O’Mahony added further tries for the winners, while a late rally saw John Cleary and Kieran Bennett reply with tries for Bruff and Bennett converted one.

Young Munster defeated Garryowen 17-0 at Tom Clifford Park with tries from Paul Allen and Mark O’Mara. Cian Casey converted both and also added a penalty.

U.L. Bohemian ran in five tries in their 29-10 away win over Nenagh Ormond. Paul Clancy and Oisin Fagan each scored two tries and Barry Richardson got one. Harry Byrne kicked two conversions.

Holders Cork Constitution will face Highfield in the final of the Cork Charity Cup after both sides won their semi-final ties.

Highfield had to withstand a late U.C.C. rally before emerging 24-21 winners at Woodleigh Park. Chris Bannon (2) and Miah Cronin were among the Highfield try scorers and James Taylor kicked two conversions. College replied with tries from Louis Bruce and Rob Hedderman and Eoin Monahan kicked three penalties and a conversion.

Cork Constitution defeated Cashel 29-7 with Tomás Quinlan scoring two tries and kicking three conversions and a penalty, Rob Jermyn and Barry Galvin also scored tries for the winners.

Dolphin won the Cyril Fitzgerald Plate when they defeated neighbours Sunday’s Well 48-14 in the final of the Cork Charity Shield at Musgrave Park. Daryl Foley was Dolphin’s leading scorer with a try and four conversions, while Cian Scott, Craig O’Herlihy, Kevin Allen, Matt Ryan, Dave Jennings, Craig O’Connell, and Luke Moloney also scored tries. Despite being outplayed in the opening half a young Well side never gave up and were rewarded with late tries from Rob O’Keeffe and Cillian Drinan both of which Rob Egar converted.

Mallow defeated Kanturk 31-17 in their opening game in the Cork County Cup. Dave Breen contributed a try, a penalty and two conversions to Mallow’s tally. Dan Lucey, Chris O’Regan, and Stephen Hayes scored tries and Stuart Henderson added two conversions. Brian O’Sullivan and Ciaran Vaughan replied with tries for Kanturk and Stephen McAuliffe added two conversions and a penalty.

Four penalties from Rob Cahill earned Muskerry a 12-5 away win over Crosshaven.

Richmond defeated Young Munster 40-15 in the opening round of the Transfield Cup. The winners were awarded three penalty tries and Shane Halpin and Jack O’Halloran (2) were their other try scorers. Brian Mullins kicked two conversions.

Thomond had to come from behind to defeat U.L. Bohemian 17-9. Dominic Fitzpatrick and Adam Guerin scored tries for Thomond and Guerin converted both and also added a penalty.
