Weekend Rugby Review

Over three quarters of the Junior games scheduled for the weekend went ahead.

Cashel have extended their advantage at the top of the Munster Junior League with a 52-3 home win over Waterpark.

The winners were 26-3 ahead at the break with tries by Jack Ryan, Kevin Leamy, Cian O’Connor and John Ed O’Connor, three of which Pat O’Connor converted.

Brendan O’Connor, John Ed O’Connor scored further tries and Pat O’Connor got two and kicked three conversions. Brendan Walsh replied with a penalty for Waterpark.

Richmond won the top game of the day with a 22-16 home win over Crosshaven. The defending champions finished the stronger coming from 16-9 down as the game entered the final quarter. Jeff McNamara scored a try and penalty for the winners. Stephen Clancy scored a second try and Michael Kelleher kicked three first half penalties for the home side. Andrew Lane replied with a try for Crosshaven and Cian McGovern kicked a conversion and three penalties.

Old Christians lost valuable ground for a top five finish with a 10-6 away defeat by Skibbereen. Peter Stout scored a try for the home side and David Shannon kicked a conversion and penalty. Aidan Tobin kicked two penalties for the Rathcooney side.

Kilfeacle moved up the table with a maximum points 25-21 home win over Thurles. Darren Lowry, Jack O’Sullivan, James Mullane and Shane Luby were try scorers for Kilfeacle and Luby added a penalty and conversion. Eoin Dwyer and John Lillis replied with tries for Thurles and Aidan Dwyer kicked a conversion and three penalties.
Clonmel ended their recent poor run with a 21-3 home win over Cobh Pirates. Conor Cooney scored a try, conversion and three penalties for the winners and Robbie Carroll also got a try. Mark Chandler replied with a drop goal for Cobh.

Four of the fifteen Munster Junior Cup ties were postponed. Kanturk came very close to causing a major upset at Coonagh before going down to Shannon 23-21. The home side led 18-9 three minutes before the break when they were reduced to fourteen when one of their players was shown a red card. Kanturk sized the opportunity to close the gap to two points with a converted try to leave it 18-16 at half time. Leonard Mullane and Colm Quinn scored tries for Shannon and Quinn kicked a conversion, penalty and drop goal. John O’Sullivan was a try scorer for Kanturk and Darragh Meade kicked three penalties and a conversion.

A try by Damian McNamara on sixty four minutes put Kanturk ahead. With ten minutes of injury time, Paddy Torrie restored Shannon’s advantage on 82 minutes but Meade missed two penalties for the visitors after this score.
Abbeyfeale defeated Division Three leaders Presentation 11-3. Andrew Scannell scored a try for Abbeyfeale and David Collins kicked two penalties for the winners.

Division Two leaders Newcastle West needed extra time to defeat Bandon 28-24. The West Limerick side led 7-6 at half time with a try by Carl Hayes which Tom Kelleher converted. Cathal Crowley replied with two penalties for the home side. The sides were level 14-14 at full time with David Ahern scoring a try for the West Cork side and Crowley kicking a penalty. Niall Kennedy scored a second try for Newcastle West which Kelleher converted.

Crowley put Bandon in front with a penalty in extra time but tries by Sean Berkery and Sean Neville both converted by Kelleher saw the visitors advance. Mick Murphy replied with a try for Bandon which Crowley converted in extra time.
A try by Andrew Hannon for Bantry Bay in their first ever Munster Junior Cup tie was not enough as they lost at home to Carrick-on-Suir 6-5. Michael Cronin kicked a penalty in each half for the winners. This game doubled up as a league game also.

Garryowen travelled to Muskerry and advanced on a 23-8 scoreline. Willie Healy scored a try for Muskerry and Eoin Keohane kicked a penalty.

Midleton defeated Waterford City 12-5 at the Towns Park. The winners were awarded a penalty which Ciaran Byrnes converted and Sean White also scored a try. David Whelan replied with a try for the visitors.

Clonakilty defeated Old Crescent at The Vale. Matt Kirby, Sean Duignan and Eoin Ryan were try scorers for the winners and James Deasy kicked two conversions and a penalty.

In the other all Third Division clashes Fermoy defeated Killorglin 65-20. Courtney Canning, Peter White and Darren Roche each scored two tries for Fermoy. Joe Lee, David McCarthy, Stephen Dunne, Shane O’Riordan and Ned O’Brien also crossed the white wash. O’Riordan kicked five conversions.

Douglas defeated Shandon 24-7 at Moneygourney. Deo O’Connor scored two tries for the winners and Alan Walsh got one with Padraic McSweeney converting all three and also adding a penalty. Andrew Quigley replied with a try for Shandon which Conor Buckley converted.

There were also two other all Second Division clashes. Two penalties by Sean Lyons was enough for St. Mary’s to give them a 6-3 away win over Castleisland. Mark Connolly kicked a penalty for the home side.

Kinsale were 38-19 home winners over Newport. Colm McCarthy and Shane O’Regan scored two tries each for the home side and Peter Murphy and Brian Egan got one apiece. Murphy converted four of the tries. Tom Ryan, Brian Collins and Myles Shinners were try scorers for Newport and Collins kicked two conversions.

Dolphin and Carrigaline played out an exciting 18-18 draw in their section of the Junior 2 League South. Mark Long, Tim Cotter and Dave Griffin were try scorers for Dolphin and Pat Aherne kicked a penalty. Dave O’Donoghue and Brendan Kelly replied with tries for Carrigaline and John Tait added a conversion and two penalties.

U.C.C. defeated Cork Constitution last Wednesday under the lights at the Mardyke 33-21 with Theo Cullinane and Luke Duffy getting two tries each and Jack O’Sullivan one. Duffy converted four of the tries.
