Weekend Rugby Round-Up

Holders Richmond were knocked out of the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup as Bandon, Kilfeacle, Newcastle West and Skibbereen booked their places in the semi-finals.

For the second time this season Bandon recorded a one point home win over Richmond. They already defeated the Limerick side 6-5 in the league and in their Junior Clubs Cup tie they had to withstand a late finish by the holders before emerging 18-17 winners. A try from Olan Crowley after five minutes which Kerry Desmond converted and a second try by Tim Crowley on eighteen minutes gave the home side a 12-0 lead.

Brian Bennett opened Richmond’s account with a penalty ten minutes before half time. Richmond were reduced to fourteen players following a yellow card early in the second half and Desmond kicked the resulting penalty. Kieran Bennett brought Richmond back into the game with a try which Brian Bennett converted.
Desmond added a second penalty as Bandon found themselves with two players in the sin bin.

Richmond pressed home their numerical advantage and Sami Farag scored a try in the corner with four minutes remaining and Brian Bennett converted. However, Bandon held out to book their place in the last four.

Skibbereen made amends for their 41-9 league defeat by St. Senan’s at the Clare venue last month with a 38-22 home win in their quarter final tie.

Mike Calnan, David Jennings, Jack Driscoll and Ray Jardai scored tries for Skibbereen. Denis McCarthy kicked three conversions and four penalties.

St. Senan’s replied with two tries from Brian Collins and Dale O’Loughlin added a try, penalty and two conversions.

Kilfeacle were 19-13 away winners at Galbally. The visitors led 8-3 at half time with a try from Ciaran Lowery and a Shane Looby penalty. Jack O’Mullane kicked a penalty for the home side.

A Diarmuid McCarthy try and two penalties from Jamie Heuston put Kilfeacle in control. Mullane added a second penalty for Galbally and Oisin Walsh scored a try in the final minutes which Liam Casey converted.

Newcastle West booked their semi final spot with a 25-10 home win over Clonakilty. Tries from Sean Herlihy and Sean Murphy, both of which Herlihy converted and a Herlihy penalty had the home side 17-5 ahead at the interval. Ogie Scannell replied with a try for Clonakilty.

Sean Neville added a third try for the home side and Herlihy converted and also kicked a penalty. Shane Scannell scored a second try for the visitors.

The draw for the semi finals will see Skibbereen host Kilfeacle and Bandon have home advantage against Newcastle West. Ties to be played on the 18^th December with a 2pm kick off.

There were four games played in the Donal Walsh U20 League. UCC Beagles have gone top after 20-15 win over Shannon at Coonagh on Friday night. Richard Cassidy scored two tries for the students and Bobby Smith converted both and also added two penalties.

Cork Constitution moved into second place following their 34-15 win over Highfield under the lights at Woodleigh Park. It was a closely contested opening half which Con’ led 15-10 with tries from Sean Gray and Billy Pope. Eoin Lacey kicked a conversion and a penalty. Eoin Keating scored Highfield’s try and Luke Kingston kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Con’ added further tries from Rob Walsh, Gordon Good and Billy Pope, with Lacey converting two of the tries.

The UCC Bloodhounds recorded their first win with a 22-12 win at Bruff. Galvin Russau scored two tries for the winners and Conor O’Dwyer added a try, two conversions and a penalty.

Tries from Cameron O’Shaughnessy, Keith Kelliher, Alec Pope, Luke Fleming and Alan O’Sullivan were not enough for Dolphin who lost away to Young Munster 35-29.
