It was the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup competition that dominated the weekend fixtures list with no major shocks.
Garryowen marched into the fourth round with a comfortable 28-14 away win at Cashel to set up a trip to Old Crescent next week in Round Four. The Light Blues raced into a 28-0 lead with tries from Oisin Cooke, Patrick Leonard and Mark McCarthy. Kyle Luck kicked two conversions and three penalties. Cashel scored two converted tries late in the game.
A late try by Bobby Purcell gave Kilfeacle a 27-24 home win against Richmond. The hosts raced into an early 19-0 lead with tries from Gavin McCormack, Kevin Kinnane and Purcell with Luke Heuston converting two of them. Richmond drew level with tries by Paul O’Shea, Osama Farag and a penalty try, with Jack Cross adding one conversion. Heuston kicked a penalty to restore Kilfeacle’s advantage but a second try by O’Shea put Richmond 24-22 ahead entering the final minutes, before Purcell struck with his second try to send the Tipperary side to Highfield next week.
An evenly contested opening half at Ballyanly saw Muskerry hold a 17-10 advantage at the interval against Sunday’s Well, but the hosts dominated after the break to run out comfortable winners 42-10. Tom Griffin, Liam Ryan, David Galvin, Frankie Horgan and Eoin O’Leary scored tries for Muskerry. Rob Cahill kicked two conversions, and three penalties and Dan Morrissey also added a conversion. The ‘Well replied with a try from Andrew Mintern and a conversion and a penalty by Ciaran Maguire.
Shannon had a comfortable 78-5 away win at Ballincollig. The visitors were 47-0 up at half time with Luke Moylan and Christian Storey scoring two tries each. Their other try scorers were Gus Harrington, Kieran Kennedy, Matt TePau, Tommy O’Riordan, Cillian Corkery, Rory McDermott, Kieran Shyaibovich and Rory O’Gorman. Cillian O’Connor kicked nine conversions.
Bandon defeated Midleton 32-17 to setup a home tie against Shannon next week. Adam Hutchinson, Padraig Galvin, Gearoid O’Leary and Conor Mueller scored tries for Bandon. Hugh O’Mahony kicked two conversions and a penalty, and Dylan Barr added a conversion and a penalty. Darragh Daly replied with two tries for Midleton, and Stuart O’Connor converted both and also added a penalty.
Clonmel defeated Charleville 59-29. With Ben Muska scoring two of their nine tries. Gerrit Huisamen, Alex Sheehan, Brandon Delicato, Michael Connellan, Brian O’Dea, Lar Houlihan and Harry Lane were their other try scorers. Connellan kicked seven conversions. Charleville replied with three tries from Jake Madigan and one each by Conor Barrett and Jack Barrett. Jess Smith added two conversions. Clonmel will travel to Muskerry next week.
Cork Constitution will host Carrick-on-Suir in the 4th Round next week, following their 29-10 home win against Skibbereen. David Bamidale scored two tries for Con’ and Mark O’Connor and David Good got one each. George Coomber kicked three conversions and a penalty. Timothy Farrell scored a try for Skibb’ and David Shannon converted and also added a penalty.
Thomond are through to the quarter finals after their 53-23 away win at Newcastle West. Jamie McGarry scored three tries for the winners, Evan Maher got two and Colin Slater and Jason Kiely got one each. Kiely kicked six conversions and two penalties. Shane Airey replied with a try, two conversions and three penalties for the hosts and Cian Mulcahy also scored a try.
Clanwilliam advanced to the Semi-Final of the Munster Junior Plate with a narrow 39-38 away win at Kinsale. Jack Quinlan scored two tries for the Tipperary side and Mark Costigan got one. Niall Leahy converted all three tries and also kicked six penalties. Andrew O’Connell replied with two tries for Kinsale, and Brian O’Donnell, Tim Lynch, Erhan Farley and Evan Wrenne got one each. Robin O’Flynn kicked four conversions.
In the Women’s All Ireland League, the meeting of the top two sides, saw Railway Union extend their advantage to five points after their 17-10 home win against UL Bohemian. The hosts led 12-5 at the interval and Eilis Cahill scored a try in each half for the visitors.
Despite being 15-0 behind at half time Ballincollig staged a second half recovery away to Suttonians but lost 18-12. Aoibheann McGrath scored two tries for Ballincollig and Emma Connolly added a conversion.
