Weekend Rugby Roundup

Cork Constitution, Dolphin and Highfield booked their places in the semi finals of the Cork Charity Cup, as U.L. Bohemian overcame Young Munster in the opening game of the Limerick Charity Cup.

A try four minutes from time by Ned Hodson and converted from the side line by Darragh Lyons saw Cork Constitution defeat Cashel 16-14 at the Tipperary venue in a game that also doubled up as last year’s final.
Two penalties from Ben Swindlehurst to one by Lyons saw Cashel 6-3 ahead at half time. The sides were level 9-9 after 60 minutes and 10 minutes from time Kevin Leamy scored a try for Cashel that looked like giving them the title for the first time until Con’s late rally.

At Musgrave Park newcomers to senior rugby Kanturk came close to causing a major upset before an injury time comeback saw Dolphin win 34-27. The home side led 24-10 at half-time with tries from James Rochford, Robert Riordan and Brian Quill. Stuart Lee converted all three and also kicked a penalty.
Peter Earlie scored a try for Kanturk and Mark Healy converted and also kicked a penalty.

In the second half the Duhallow side dominated and tries by Healy and Sean Cremin both converted by Healy who also added a penalty to lead 27-24 with seventeen minutes remaining.
Eight minutes of injury time was played and Lee tied the scores with a penalty and converted a try by Ryan Murphy to send Dolphin through to a semi-final meeting with Sunday’s Well.

At Woodleigh Park, Highfield caused a major upset with a 40-10 win over Midleton.
Highfield Coach Timmy Ryan decided to give several of his young panel a run against a very experienced Midleton side.

Playing with a strong wind in the opening half Midleton trailed 12-10 at the break. Kevin Foyle scored two tries for Highfield and Patrick O’Toole added a conversion. Sean White replied with a try for Midleton and Paul Daly converted and also added a penalty.

Tries from John Stephenson, Brian O’Hea, James Daly and O’Toole all converted by the ‘Field out-half set up a meeting next week against the holders.

In Limerick, U.L. Bohemian defeated Young Munster 27-18 at Annacotty. The home side led 14-10 at half time with tries from Darragh Moroney and Eoin Cross. Joe Murray converted both. Young Munster were awarded a penalty try and Willie Staunton converted and also added a penalty.

A penalty by Staunton and a try by Craig O’Hanlon saw Munster’s lead 18-14, but two Murray penalties and a conversion of a try by Colin Ryan saw the Robins advance to a home quarter final tie against Thomond next week.
