Weekend Rugby Roundup & Results

On a quiet weekend, only one of the scheduled junior men’s games went ahead due to the weather.

In the game that was played there was a big upset in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup when struggling Third Division side Tralee defeated high flying Second Division Clonakilty at the west Cork venue.

Having won the toss Clonakilty elected to play with the elements but they found themselves on the back foot for long periods in the first half.

Early pressure by Tralee was rewarded with a try in the corner by Eoin O’Carroll after twelve minutes.

Clonakilty hit back quickly with a try from Michael O’Regan and Eoghan Deasy’s conversion had them in front.

On the stroke of half time Jack Quilter kicked a penalty for Tralee to give them an 8-7 half time lead.

Fifteen minutes into the second half Quilter added another penalty.

Sensing an upset Clonakilty raised their game and Deasy went in for a try in the corner following a quick tap penalty.

A great drive by the Clonakilty pack saw them score a third try with Moss Downey being credited with the touch down to make it 17-11 with nine minutes remaining.

A great chip up the wing by Fearghal Ó’Nuallain saw the Tralee winger win the race to touch down and Quilter converted to give Tralee an 18-17 lead.

With time almost up Deasy tried a long range penalty effort into a gale force wind but his effort just wind wide of the posts.
