Weekend Senior Rugby Roundup

The Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Challenge Cup got underway with no upsets in the opening games at the weekend.

Highfield opened their campaign with a 34-10 home victory over Nenagh Ormond. Highfield led 10-5 at the interval and Lorcan Kavanagh (2), Dan O’Sullivan, Brian O’Hea, Ian McCarthy and Paul Buckley all scored tries. Shane O’Riordan kicked two conversions. John Coffey and Nicky Irwin replied with tries for Nenagh.

Highfield will be away to Old Crescent next week in the second round after the Rosbrien side defeated Thomond 41-17. The sides were level 12-12 at half-time but the home side ran out comfortable winners after the break.

Kevin Doyle (2), Donal Murphy, Brian Touhy, Shane Mullally and Cian Reale were Crescent’s try scorers. Ronan McKenna kicked four conversions and a penalty.

Cashel edged out UL Bohemian 23-16 at Annacotty, Niall Fitzgerald scored a try for Cashel and they were also awarded a penalty try. Jason Newton kicked three penalties and a conversion. Harry Fleming scored a try and a conversion for the home side and Mike Mullally kicked three penalties.

Dolphin will be away to Cashel next week after they defeated Midleton 3-0 at the Towns Park thanks to a penalty by Daryl Foley.
