A large crowd turned up at Irish Independent Park for this Ulster Bank League Division 2B clash, which sees Sunday’s Well move into fourth place in the table after a rip roaring contest.
Sunday’s Well 24 – 15 Kanturk
Friday night rugby again brought out another big crowd for what was a very entertaining contest that was in the balance until ten minutes from time when Sunday’s Well scored their third try to take a 24-10 lead.
Referee Helen O’Reilly made history becoming the first female referee to officiate at an Ulster Bank League game and her presence went unnoticed which is a good sign for a referee.
There was an explosive start to the game with Ross O’Mahony scoring a try for the ‘Well inside the opening minute after Cyprian Jouve set him up. Shane O’Riordan converted.
Three minutes later Kanturk were level when a break from Dan McCabe saw him touchdown and Paul O’Keeffe converted.
O’Keeffe put Kanturk ahead with a penalty on eight minutes for a 10-7 lead.
The ‘Well regained the lead on thirty minutes when O’Mahony scored his second try and O’Riordan converted for a 14-10 half time lead.
O’Keeffe was off target with a long range penalty a minute after the restart for Kanturk.
Great ‘Well defending kept Kanturk out as the visitors dominated the third quarter.
O’Riordan extended the ‘Well’s advantage with a penalty mid way through the half and they could have gone further ahead when they had two kickable penalties reversed following the intervention of the touch judges.
Ten minutes from time a move involving Jouve, Kieran Stokes and David Kingston setup a try for Alex O’Regan and O’Riordan converted for a 24-10 lead.
The ‘Well came close to a fourth try for a bonus point, but Kanturk got a try in injury time from Tadhg McSweeney but O’Keeffe’s conversion attempt went wide to deny the visitors a losing bonus point.
