Women & Girls Development Update
27th November 2019 By The Editor
The past month has been one of firsts for new developments launched within the women and girls game in Munster.
Developments have taken place across a number of age groups throughout clubs and schools in the province.
Women’s Development League
The Women’s Development League initiative kicked off in late October with Galbally RFC five clubs participating on the day – Bantry Bay RFC, Dungarvan RFC, host club Galbally RFC, Richmond RFC and Waterpark RFC.
The aim is to provide games for clubs developing and growing numbers at senior level.
The teams recently took part in their second blitz day at Irish Independent Park and were joined by UL Bohemians RFC, Carrick on Suir RFC and a newly formed team from Skibbereen RFC.
It was a great occasion for all involved and there was some excellent rugby played throughout.
U17 Girls Regional Development Programme
The newly rolled out U17 development programme is designed for players born in 2003/2004.
There was a fantastic response from clubs across the province with over 100 girls taking part in screening trials across three regions.
Squads have been selected and training has commenced with the first game day scheduled for Irish Independent Park on Sunday 1 December.
1st Year School Blitz Day
A new programme to increase participation numbers within second level schools was launched this year for first year students.
Training sessions commenced in September and the first of a number of blitz days took place last at Ballina/Killaloe RFC with teams from Coláiste Íde agus Iosef, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick, St. Anne’s Community College, Killaloe, and Rockwell College, Cashel, Co. Tipperary.
Over 45 girls enjoyed a busy morning with a skills session followed by a number of games.
An enjoyable morning was had by all and a blitz day for schools in the Cork region is being held in early December.
