Wooden Spoon Special Needs Tag Tournament A Huge Success

The highly successful annual Wooden Spoon Tag Rugby Tournament for individuals with an intellectual disability recently took place at Garryowen FC.

Teams from all over Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England travelled to compete in the one day event which primarily focused on fun and making new friends.

Approximately 20 clubs were represented throughout the home nations with 400 excited and committed tag rugby players taking part.

A BBQ lunch and dinner was also provided for over 1,000 people in attendance, while the 'Music Generation' double decker touring bus was parked in front of the club house providing excellent live music on stage throughout the day.

Munster Rugby Community Rugby Officer Euan Gee, was on board to assist with the coordination of the volunteers as well as managing the matches and the event.

Euan, who has been instrumental in the development of special needs tag rugby in Munster acknowledged the benefits and enjoyment all the players got from their participation in the one day festival.

“The tournament was a great success and shows how much the players benefit from their involvement in the sport throughout the season.

“There is huge scope for adults and kids with special needs to get involved in Tag Rugby within the province and Munster Rugby would be delighted to assist along the way.”

Munster Rugby would like to congratulate Garryowen FC on hosting an excellent event and look forward to Irish teams travelling to next year's tournament which will take place in the English town of Witney.
