Young Munster Girls Skills Day

2nd April 2009 By Munster Rugby

Young Munster Girls Skills Day

The pro active approach that Womens clubs are now taking in making sure their development is strong at all times became even more evident Wednesday March 12th, when Young Munster RFC were host to another Munster School Girls Skills day.

One hundred girls from three local schools were invited along to take on an afternoon of rugby skills including Tackle, Fall, Scrums, Lineouts and Handling skills.

The idea as always is to allow non rugby playing girls to experience the game in its truest form rather than Tag all the time.

The objective of the day is to then allow the clubs to make the girls aware of the clubs structure for under age teams in Young Munster. Making them aware of training times etc and give a face and contact to the club so as to lessen the intimidation factor for some girls in joining a club for the first time.

Young Munster Coaches Trish Montgomery and Fiona Hobin were present on the day along with Ken Imbusch.

Schools that attended included Laurel Hill, Salesians, and Nessans Community School and all girls showed incredible ability some of who had literally never touched a rugby ball before.

They were all expertly guided through drills specially set up to allow them not only experience the key factors of each particular skill but carry it out in a fun and interesting way.

Yes. Even tackling can be made fun and interesting, as the rather mucky girls discovered.

The day finished with games to allow the girls to try out some of their newfound skills and all were in agreement that this was a great way to be involved in a team sport.

Young Munster are currently looking for new players to join their ever expanding team so if you want to be part of something great and feel like making friends for life plus experiencing the worlds greatest game then join Young Munster girls every Friday 6.30pm -7.30pm in Tom Clifford Park Greenfields or contact Trish on 087-2311603.

As always it’s not too late to have a skills day for your club and should you wish to have one organised please contact Bridget Ryan 087-6590247 or email bridgetryan@munsterrugby.ie
