Youth Leader Rugby Programme

Cork Sports Partnership, Cork City Council & Munster Rugby have teamed up to co-ordinate a New Youth Leader Rugby Programme for male and females aged 16-18 years.

The aim of the programme is to support and develop participants’ coaching skills, confidence and leadership in a supportive environment.

Last week, participants completed their on-field practical at Musgrave Park with the help of Munster Rugby CCRO’s Brian Scott and Emmett O’Callaghan. Rugby Development Officer Eugene McCarthy and Participation Officer Ray Gadsden have been co-ordinating the exciting project.

Over the previous four weeks, the 15 participants completed their IRFU Rugby Prime, Safeguarding and First Aid courses.

The new leaders will now take the next step in their development by assisting Munster Rugby staff during the ‘Rugby On The Green’ initiative which aims to give children in parts of Cork City the opportunity to play rugby for the first time.

Munster Rugby Participation Officer, Ray Gadsden said:

“These new coaches will help, shadow and support our staff during the ‘Rugby on the Green’ programme during the summer. Our relationship with both the Cork City Council and Cork Sports Partnership continues to grow from strength to strength.”

During last week’s practical element at Musgrave Park, the youth leaders had the opportunity to work with the pupils of Togher and CBC National Schools.

A selection of pictures from the practical can be seen below.
