Inaugural Zara Horan Cup Competition To Kick Off This Weekend
3rd October 2024 By The Editor
The inaugural Zara Horan cup competition will get underway this Sunday with a double header taking place in Shannon RFC, Thomond Park.
The competition is a regional based U18.5 competition created to further support the growth of the women’s player development pathway .
The competition will run over the course of the season alongside the existing U18.5 league and cup competitions.
It will be contested by four regional teams, North Munster, South Munster, East Munster and West Munster.
Zara Horan was a talented rugby player who played for Shannon RFC. She sadly passed away in 2020 aged just 20 years old.
Speaking about the new competition Zara’s family said:
“Firstly we would like to thank everyone involved for remembering our beautiful Zara by naming this competition after her. We are beyond proud and deeply honoured and although it’s hard seeing and hearing her name being mentioned the pride we are experiencing outweighs this.”
“Zara was a real team player and she loved her rugby. She mixed with everyone and looked after anyone who needed a friend or a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen. Zara was beautiful inside and out as anyone who knew her would tell you.”
“She would have been a champion for the cause for the development of women’s rugby and that’s why this means so much to us. Thanks again to all involved and hopefully women’s rugby will gain from it.”
The competition will kick off this weekend as East Munster take on West Munster at 11:30am while North Munster takes on South Munster at 2pm.
