Munster A Lose In Donnybrook

Munster A are out of the B&I Cup after losing 47-15 to Leinster A in Donnybrook on Friday night.

The hosts led 25-3 at the break and, despite a spirited second half Munster comeback, secured a comprehensive six-try win.

Paddy Butler and Jack O'Donoghue were the try-scorers for Peter Malone's side as they fell to just their second defeat of the season with Girvan Dempsey's Leinster A side deservedly into the semi-final.

Munster A were slow out of the blocks and were trailing 11-0 after just 13 minutes. All the points came from Cathal Marsh as the out-half forced his way over the line from short range for the first try after just five minutes.

The out-half’s conversion struck the outside of the post but he kicked two penalties shortly afterwards, for a Munster infringement in the scrum and an offside respectively, to put Leinster into a commanding early lead.

The hosts scored their second try after 21 minutes when full-back Darren Hudson and winger Andrew Boyle set up Noel Reid to touch down in the right corner. Referee Craig Maxwell Keys awarded the try after a brief consultation with the touch judge and Marsh landed the difficult conversion to make it 18-0.

Jack Conan went over for the third try just after the half hour as he barged his way over the line after a five-yard scrum, this time in the left corner. Marsh was spot on again with the conversion and the Leinster lead stood at 25 points.

Rory Scannell made a superb break through the Leinster midfield as Munster finally began to threaten the Leinster line but Sam Coghlan Murray managed to prevent the try with a brilliant recovery tackle.

Shortly after, Munster A were awarded a penalty and Scannell kicked the points to make it 25-3 at the break.

The second half was an action-packed affair with Butler touching down in the 45th minute after a rolling maul with substitute David Johnston, making his B&I Cup debut, off target with the conversion.

Tom Denton replied with another Leinster A try seven minutes later with Marsh converting but Munster A hit back immediately as substitute Jack O'Donoghue touching down after showing great speed and Johnston converted to make it 32-15.

Marsh kicked his third penalty for Leinster A to increase the lead in the 62nd minute before crossing for his second try four minutes later to put the result beyond doubt.

Marsh converted the try with Andrew Boyle crossing for the final try at the death to complete the scoring as Munster crash out of the competition at the hands of Leinster for the second year in a row.
